Helpful Tips for New Apologists

Why should I be an apologist?

Strictly speaking, though we all do it in different ways, all Christians are apologists. Our goal as Christians is to bring more people to salvation, and apologetics is an important part of that. Apologetics also strengthens our own faith. Furthermore, several passages in Scripture call us to this job. While not everyone is going to be as great as the "big names" in apologetics, a time will likely come in every Christian's life when they are called upon to defend the faith.

For most Christians, this may simply be a colleague at work asking about the faith. It may be a family member. It could even be a stranger in the street. At some point, if you're as open with your faith as any consistent Christian should be, you're going to have to defend it. But for some people, that might be more than just the occasional debate or discussion. Scripture tells us that each member of the body has our own individual roles. We have gifts, and we use them in various ways. Those skilled in apologetics may reach a wider audience, either strengthening the faith of the brethren, equipping others within the Church, or even convincing unbelievers to repent. This role is, therefore, an important one.

Tips

In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. - 2 Timothy 2:25-26 KJV
