How my friend's trials spared my little brother

As Christians, we remain in the world, and as such, we are not immune from the struggles of life. Anyone who tells you Christians who suffer don't have enough faith does not understand faith, especially given that suffering is designed to increase our faith (Romans 5:3-4; 2 Corinthians 1:8-10).

But of course, we don't always understand this. There are times in our lives when everything just seems hopeless, we feel like we're suffocating, and we just want to throw up our arms and ask God why He would allow such chaos to choke us. There was a time when my friend, whom we'll call "Layla", felt like this. She used to work in a movie theatre, which is not the most friendly environment, especially not for a Christian.

One of the things she felt especially upset about is the particularly depraved movies she had to work with. She would occasionally be required to enter a show room where a sex scene was showing. One example is the movie "Rocket Man", depicting the life of Elton John. I remember her lamenting the possibility that she would walk in on one of the more explicit scenes in the movie, which features at least one sex scene. With such terrible working conditions, Layla could not help but feel she was in the wrong place. She could not understand why she was where she was. All she could see was the storm she was in.

I have a little brother. He is severely autistic, and as a result is incredibly naive. One night, he told me gleefully that he was going to see Rocket Man. He had no idea what he was getting into, and if it was not for Layla being in the position she was in, I would never have known. Without Layla being in that awful position, my naive, somewhat innocent little brother, may have been traumatised for a very long time. Layla's difficult position saved my little brother.

Whatever you're going through, wherever you are, if you are a Christian, you can know for a fact that God knows what He's doing with you. As I said to my friend, if you feel like you're suffocating, it's probably because God's holding you so tight. Trust in Him, because even if you can't see, He can.
