Lessons from Naaman

Writer: Bible BrianBible Brian

Perhaps many of you can empathise with Naaman's mindset in 2 Kings 5. How many of us have expected God to do something in our lives, whether in response to prayer or simply just as a natural behavior of God, only to find out God isn't in the business of conforming to our expectations?

What do you do when you encounter these situations? Naaman had two responses. His first response was one of anger. His expectations were not met, and so he raged against it, and almost didn't go through with what he was asked to do. But his mindset was changed when one of his servants pointed out that he'd have been quite happy to perform a great task, so why shouldn't he do something so simple as to wash in the river? Naaman had a change of heart, and ultimately followed God in faith, to his benefit, as he was perfectly healed!

When God doesn't behave as we expect Him to, we have the same choice Naaman had. We may choose to get angry, and in our stubbornness, may refuse to act in faith. But taking that option will ultimately result in our circumstances being the exact same. The second option is much better: Trust that God knows what He's doing, and obey Him. This will yield far better results. Maybe not the result you want, but the result you need, for sure.
