Who knows why you are where you are?

Looking through the Bible, it's easy to forget that most of the people involved had absolutely no idea what they were doing. When we think of Esther, we think of a heroine who saved the Jews by convincing the King to protect them. We rarely think of the fact that neither she, nor Mordecai, knew that their story would be told by God Himself for as long as the earth endures.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is real faith. For starters, Mordecai knew that God was always going to deliver the Jews. Whether by convincing Xerxes by sending Esther, by a revolution lead by a Godly leader, or even by showing up Himself to set things right, Mordecai knew that there was nothing that could stop God from fulfilling His promises. We need to recognise that God is also with us, and His goals will be achieved one way or the other.

But Mordecai also knew that God rarely tells man to sit back and watch. God does raise up Godly men and women. Prophets, judges, kings, warriors, qualified or not, God often uses man for His goals. And so he saw Esther, in the perfect position to save the Jews, and he encouraged her to use that. This one hits closer to home, at least for me. How many of us have let opportunities pass us by? What did we gain by it? Answer: Nothing. God doesn't need us to do His will in order to achieve His goals, so He loses nothing either way. But we do. We lose our chance to take part in that. We can say "God put me here, I acted, it was great." Or we can say "God put me here, I refused to act, and so I missed my chance to be a part of that great thing."

We may not always be sure. Neither was Mordecai. "Who knows?" he asked. But look where you are. Who knows if God has put you there to do something great? It doesn't even have to be revolutionary. Maybe you've only been entrusted with one mina as opposed to Esther's 10 (Luke 19:11-27). That's still something you can use for God's glory.

You may not be a queen, capable of creating a political atmosphere in which Godliness can breathe. You may not be a CEO, capable of feeding your entire city just with your salary. Perhaps you don't even have much more than a roof over your head, food on your plate and the device upon which you're reading this article. Maybe, Lord forbid, you will lose even that. The Lord can put you in a billion different situations, and you can glorify Him with all of it. Who knows why you are where you are? Who knows why you will go where you will go. Even your past may have far reaching consequences you will never see. Look for what you might do, and trust the Lord to handle the rest.
