A great honor scripture gives women

Throughout history, various cultures have twisted the gender roles set forward by God and made the two genders unequal. 9 times out of 10 (though there have been cases where the reverse is true), men have subjugated and oppressed women.

But despite several of its authors living contemporaneously with such crimes against nature, the Bible does not condone such misogyny. In fact, women are very highly regarded within its pages, and given several high honours. There are several specific heroines, such as Shiprah and Puah, who saved the Hebrew babies from Pharaoh's evil decree. There are great leaders and prophetesses, such as Deborah the Judge. There are brave women, like Esther, and humble women, like Mary. Rahab, the harlot of Jericho, has the honour of being one of Jesus' ancestors. Mary, who anointed Jesus' feet, was promised that her story would be told wherever the Gospel is preached as a memorial to her. Jesus broke down several social barriers when He spoke to the woman at the well, and it is very significant that the first to discover His empty tomb were women.

By contrast, there are many specific examples of men being regarded negatively. Most specifically, while both Adam and Eve sinned in Eden, Eve is rarely mentioned. She is seen as having been deceived, but it is not her sin that brought the curse into the world. Rather, Adam, who was not deceived but ate anyway, is seen as being the culprit. The many male heroes, such as David, are shown to be flawed individuals. It is usually men who defy God. Men who abuse women when really they should protect them from such abuse.

Aside from specific examples of good women and bad men, there are many general commendations of women. Good wives are seen as one of God's most precious gifts, and serving one's own wife is seen as an acceptable (i.e. sinless) distraction from serving the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:25-40). But by far the highest honour the Bible shows to women is that wisdom, the thing the Bible says we should seek the most, is often personified as female.

Compare this with genuinely misogynistic religions, such as Islam. According to Sahih Bukhari 1:6:301, the majority of Hell is made up of women, because they are deficient in both intelligence and religion, which is why the testimony of two women is equal to that of one man. Muhammad also said, in Sahih Bukhari 9:88:219, that no nation ruled by a woman will succeed.

And yet Biblically speaking, we have Proverbs 1:20; "Wisdom calls aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open squares." Proverbs 8:1; "Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice?" Proverbs 7:4; "Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin,". Proverbs 9:1; "Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn out her seven pillars;" (all emphasis added).

I could say something stupid, like "no misogynist could write this book", but then we have to remember who did write it. Solomon, a man with 300 wives and 700 concubines, can hardly be described as a shining example of a Feminist. But praise be to God, the scriptures are not the words of their human authors, any more than this article is the word of my laptop. No, these are the words of God Himself! (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). It is God, not man, who chose to personify wisdom in such a way. The same God who created women chose to grant them the highest possible honour imaginable. To treat the most precious thing in all the world as a woman shows us exactly what God thinks of His most beautiful creations.

My dear sisters, let no man devalue you, for the Lord sees you as being more precious than the finest jewels in Heaven. My brothers, ensure Satan does not sway you to enmity with women, but lift them up as your daughters, your sisters, your wives, your mothers. Honour them as the Lord would have you do, or may the consequences be on your own heads.
