Two kinds of people fear the question "why?": Moms with very young children, and Liberals. The reason for this is the same. Neither group want to go to the depths of the issue at hand. But unlike a mom, Liberals will never be able to give "because I said so" as a valid answer.
The most challenging "why?" for a Liberal is why should abortion be considered a right? They claim it is. When abortion restrictions, and especially bans, are so much as threatened, they rise up as if slavery had just become legal again. But when you ask them why abortion is a right, they are left without an answer.
That's not to say they won't try, of course, with the majority of the answers being quite equivalent to "because I said so". Not in those words, of course, but what else can you call "my body, my choice"? But in the end, Liberals actually have no argument for any human right.
The simple reason for this is that morality is an inherently religious concept, yet Liberalism is an inherently Godless philosophy. Logically speaking, you cannot get an "ought" from an "is". We see this expressed in two ways. First, consider your favorite song. You can tell a lot about a song, objectively speaking. You can identify the individual notes, you can identify which instruments were used to play, you can identify the author, you can identify the words (if there are any), but one thing you will never be able to show is that your favorite song is a good song. All you will ever be able to show is that you like it, but not that a single other person on the Earth should.
But one might say "but I like it". And with music, that's fine. But imagine if morality worked like that. If we all did what was right in our own eyes, allowing you to kill, of all people, your own offspring, what stops someone, even your own parents, from killing you? Clearly, then, we need a law to stop you getting murdered. But do we need such laws as, for example, the requirement to drive on a specific side of the road? It's common knowledge that different countries take the opposite approach to this. In some countries, they drive on the right. In others, they drive on the left. Who's right? Neither. Who's wrong? Also neither. No government is right or wrong to say "you must drive on this side of the road". But we all know that such abhorrent practices as kidnapping, theft, rape etc. absolutely should be criminalised, and any government that permits them is objectively wrong.
This tells us two things. First, it tells us that morality and the law are separate. As, indeed, you would have to, if you're going to claim the government could be wrong to ban abortion. Second, it tells us the very simple reason morality and the law are separate: Legislation requires a legislature.
Without a government, there are no laws. You cannot call a thing "legal" or "illegal" without a government to legislate on the matter. But if we can call the government's decisions "good" or "evil", there must be a legislative "body" that has more authority than the government. What is that legislative "body"? None other than the Lord Jesus Christ!
In Matthew 28:18, Jesus tells us "...All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.". By whom? By the Father. To cut down on discussing the Trinity with unbelievers, let's simply reduce this discussion to God is the absolute highest authority. His "thou shalt nots" must never be infringed, and His "thou shalts" must always be upheld. Failure to do so is called "sin", and we have absolutely no right to do that.
In fact, such a crime is, according to scripture, punishable in only one way: God aborts you. "For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23a). And ultimately "...it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). Abortion is one such sin. In fact, though there are over 600 commands listed in the Old Testament, abortion is condemned in one of the most famous 10: "You shall not murder." (Exodus 20:11). Furthermore, John tells us "...you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him." (1 John 3:15). All that to say, abortion can never be a human right. It is one of the most atrocious evils our species has ever committed, and it really should be abolished by now. The fact that it continues, and is even aggressively defended, is testament to the total depravity of our hopeless race.
But testament to God's love is how He treats us in spite of this abomination. "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8). In the above paragraph, I cited two verses, but you will notice, one of them is only half a verse, and the other is only half a sentence. Let's read them both in full:
"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23). "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation." (Hebrews 9:27-28).
Do you see, then, how backwards the logic of abortion is? Abortion is a parent saying "I have no right to take your life, but you will die for me anyway". But the Gospel is God saying "you have forfeited your right to live, but I will die to buy it back for you". How glorious is this? The one time two wrongs make a right! "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). We can be forgiven for this repugnant act of bloodshed, if only we trust in His blood, shed for us!
To claim abortion as a human right is certainly no act of confession. It is the height of impenitence to not only continue sinning, but to actually justify it as well. It shocks me, therefore, that many who defend this abhorrent practice claim to follow the God of life. "I'm a Christian", they insist. "I believe in Jesus". But it is the devil who was a murderer from the beginning. Christ came that we may have life, and have it to the full. Therefore, all abortionists must repent, and be born again. Otherwise, as they have denied children their lives, God will deny them eternal life.
