[Note: Initially, this post was published during the chaos of the 2020 presidential election. As it addresses an important point, I have chosen to transfer it today (August 4th 2021), but I have altered it to reflect the modern state of affairs.]
The 2020 U.S. Presidential election was one of the most critical elections of U.S. history, and was undoubtedly the shadiest. Without going into too much depth, there was significant evidence that Joe Biden's victory was illegitimate. But whether you believe in The Steal or not, there really are only two possibilities, both of which should disgust any Christian, in the U.S., or anywhere else on the Earth. The first is that the U.S. election system is so insecure that an election can be successfully stolen. The second is that the U.S. electorate is so far gone that such a dastardly man as Joe Biden is not only a legitimate contender for president, but that he genuinely won. In either scenario, how should we, as Christians, respond?
There is great comfort in God's words to Pharaoh here: "But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth." (Exodus 9:16). The truth is, every election is rigged in one way or another, because the Lord is the one who is ultimately in control. Every government rose to power by the Lord's consent. Not only by His consent, but also by His ordination. Joe Biden cannot take his next breath unless God Himself gives it to him. The same is true not only for the Democrats, but for former president Trump, too. We can all praise God for the prosperity America enjoyed under president Trump, but though Biden sits in the White House, we would do well to remember Job's words to his wife: "Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity?" (Job 2:10).
Whatever happens, God is in full control, and ultimately, He has done what He plans to do so far. He will bring these terrible events to their intended conclusion, and nothing that has happened in 2020, not the coronavirus, not the riots, not the terror attacks, not The Steal, none of these things will have happened in vain. We know, as Paul says, that all things work together for the good for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). In the end, those who wait upon the Lord will receive our reward, and those who stand against Him will receive the wages of their sin.
Don't get me wrong, my brethren, these are trying times. It is ok to lament the prosperity of the wicked, for many a Psalmist has done likewise. Even to pray for the downfall of the wicked is morally acceptable. But whatever turmoil is in your hearts, be you angry, be you anxious, even if you feel your faith beginning to slip, take it to the Lord, for He cares for you. Knowing this, do not be afraid, for our God has crushed the head of the serpent. He, and by extension we, will be victorious in the end.
