"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV).
An experience I expect most Christians will be able to resonate with is those times in which we have a very clear opportunity to sin, and yet we successfully resist that opportunity. For me, one very specific opportunity springs to mind. I'm not going to confess it here, but I will say it was a seriously important moment in my faith.
As Christians, temptation does not hold anywhere near as much power over us as we like to pretend it does. Nothing you have ever been tempted to do is new, mankind has suffered every kind of evil desire since the fall. But God always provides a way out of temptation. That means that every time we are tempted, the Lord is handing us an opportunity to resist that temptation, glorifying Him and receiving some kind of heavenly reward.
Unfortunately, we are not invincible. Just because we are able to resist temptation doesn't mean we will do so every time. In these cases, Jesus is our advocate (1 John 2:1-2). But it is far better for everyone, except the devil, if we do resist. Rather than taking the opportunity to sin, let us instead glorify our Creator by taking the way out He so lovingly provides us.
