If you were to list all of the cliché things you can think of that a mother would say, I'm willing to bet the top 5 would include "if everyone else jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?" As children, none of us really liked hearing that, but as adults, we know it's a good point. Humans were designed as rational and independent thinkers. We aren't a hive mind, and we aren't stupid. Each of us has an individual responsibility to think and act rationally.
Throughout history, multiple groups missed that memo, and continue to do so to this day. Majority rule is held even higher than the word of God, and for faithful Christians, it can seem that the whole world is against us.
Because it is.
Now, I don't mean that in the sense that we ought to lock up our doors, barricade our windows and hide in our basements, lest we all be murdered by flash mobs of random unbelievers. We can be grateful that, whereas the world is opposed to sound doctrine, this opposition is not always excessively violent. It is entirely possible to reject God while being as opposed to violence as a Christian ought to be.
In fact, it is even possible to claim to be a Christian while being opposed to God. In the world today, there are far more people claiming to be Christian than are even aware of what that means, much less being faithful enough to put it into practice. As faithful Christians, we can look in despair as "Christianity" looks more and more like the world the Lord commands us to stay unstained from (James 1:27).
But fear not, my brethren, for this is the pattern of history. When Israel gave themselves to Baal, Elijah felt very much alone, but the Lord told him 7,000 people were still faithful. For hundreds of years, the Catholic Church capitalised on the ignorance of the laity, depriving them even of access to the Bible by forbidding its translation, and yet many groups remained separate. Before the flood, all flesh had corrupted its way, leaving just 8 faithful people. When Christ returns, will He find faith on the Earth?
If you are with God, you need not fear, for that is a glorious minority to be in. Better to stand alone on the truth than among many, even among a majority, who will soon find how wrong they were.
