Around 60 A.D., Jude, the brother of the Lord, and a divinely inspired author of Scripture, tells us the Christian faith was "...delivered to the saints once for all." That is, the Christian faith is now, and has been for nearly 2,000 years, a fixed faith. Modern Christians, regardless of their positions within their various congregations, have no right to change anything. We have no options: We must study the word of God, seeking the correct interpretations, and both practice and preach it.
Sadly, many so-called Christians do not apply this standard. Rather than trying to become more like Jesus, they try to make Jesus more like themselves. The culture we live in, they claim, is the one He sought to create, and the culture He lived in was outdated, which He, in their eyes, sought to correct. To follow Jesus is to be a hardcore Liberal! He wasn't a Creationist, He was a man of science, so hooray for Evolution! He never said anything about homosexuality, so obviously His culture had the wrong view! And He was totally a modern Feminist, right? So clearly He's ok with slaughtering millions of babies in the name of "healthcare".
This is the worldview openly professed by a number of public figures. A prominent example would be Nancy Pelosi. Setting aside discussions on the legitimacy of Catholicism, Nancy Pelosi claims to be a Catholic. Yet, Catholicism, while it has its Biblical flaws, is a historically Conservative faith, whereas Pelosi is an aggressive and outspoken Liberal. Because of this, she was actually denied the right to participate in the Eucharist, which made headlines. She and her fellow Liberals were outraged that she was not allowed to merge two polar opposite worldviews. A pro-abortion politician should, in her eyes, and the eyes of her followers, be allowed to claim a pro-life faith.
Now, personally, I have very little interest in the internal disputes of the Catholic Church. I chose Pelosi only because she is a prominent example with whom a large enough portion of my audience will be familiar. But there are many others who claim the Christian faith, yet have absolutely no desire to actually follow it. They see the Bible as their personal notebook, not being written so they may learn from it and seek guidance on how to relate to God and live their lives in accordance with His will, but instead being something they can utilise in order to justify their own way of life.
And this, I believe, is the whole motive. As a species, we are inconsistent for sake of our sin, but consistent for sake of our survival. We love the idea of being God, but not obeying Him. Yet, few of us will run around saying "I'm God, we do things my way". Solution? "Reinterpret" the Bible! We live in a semi-Christian culture, after all. And there are plenty of people who believe in "God", never being wise enough to pick up the Bible and know what it says, so why not just present them with the most flesh-appealing doctrines possible and pretend they come from Scripture?
Because it's wrong!
It's called hypocrisy!
You don't like hypocritical Christians, right? Of course you don't. Nobody does. Not even hypocritical Christians like hypocritical Christians. Ask any atheist, any agnostic, "hey, why aren't you a Christian?", I guarantee you, at least a quarter of them (and that's being extremely generous) will cite hypocritical Christians. We see a fish on the road rager's car, we see a cross around the neck of a Karen, we see a genuine bigot daring to profess "God loves everyone", and we just think EWW, if that's what Christianity does to a person, we want nothing to do with it.
So who are you to barge in to our churches and demand we accept this brand new, anti-Biblical, distinctly non-Christian version of Christianity? What gives you any more of a right to stand in our pulpits, or heck, even sit in our pews, being the devil's biggest fan, than the very hypocrites who make our faith so odious to the outside world? You think because it's popular hypocrisy, somehow it's better? Because people like your modified version of our religion, we should replace our faith with it? Hypocrisy is hypocrisy! Fake is fake! Lies are lies!
And if you want to live a lie? That's ok. You're welcome to do so. It's not like we can stop you. Our faith is a peaceful one. We're called to love our enemies, pray for our persecutors, live peacefully with everyone as far as it depends on us. If you want to be a Liberal, be a Liberal. But don't bring that mess to our doorstep. Don't bring your goat hide into our sheep pen, as if our shepherd won't recognise you for what you are.
And He will. See, the key element you're missing in your worldview isn't just consistency. It's truth in general. It's hypocritical to claim to be a Liberal and a Christian, and far more so to claim the Christian faith is a Liberal one, but Christianity is actually true. Our God made this world. Our God entered this world. Our God lived, died, and rose in this world. Our God ascended from this world. And in His timing, our God is coming back to this world to make His enemies His footstool.
One way or another, this mess will be cleaned up. If you want to be a Liberal, now is your time. But it is limited, and you have no way of knowing by how long. Of course, God is patience. He tells us "Dear friends, don’t let this one thing escape you: With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord does not delay His promise, as some understand delay, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:8-9).
God is patient. But even His patience runs out. A time will come when you find out the fence you are sitting on is electrified; He will turn on the power. On the one side, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death." (Proverbs 14:12; 16:25). That's where Liberalism, and indeed all false worldviews, fall. And Biblically, you have the ability to choose it. It's not a choice you will be satisfied with when the judgement comes, but you may choose it.
On the other hand, God's grace is limitless. "For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:8-10). Do you not see? You were made for so much more! You were made for good works! You weren't made for an endless pursuit of pleasures that do not satisfy! The hunger you will never satisfy, the thirst you will never quench, that's not the option you were ever designed to choose! If you choose Christ, you choose Christianity.
That doesn't mean you will immediately become perfect. In this life, sadly, Christians will sin. And Christ makes provision for that. "My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the Righteous One. He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world." (1 John 2:1-2). But there's a difference between having a standard of which you fall short, and claiming two opposing standards!
"If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say, “We don’t have any sin,” we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us." (1 John 1:8-10).
Do you see the difference? There is no truth in Liberalism, which claims the only real "sin" is the very belief in sin. Sexual immorality? Not a sin. Greed? Not a sin. Wrath? Not a sin. These things, and more, are virtues in Liberalism! It's the opposite of the Christian faith! Rather than God seeking to redeem sinful man, Liberals accuse God of sin, and seek His repentance! "How dare you oppose homosexuality, abortion, hookup culture, porn etc., God? What we do in our bedrooms is up to us! No, we're going to just edit the Bible and make you into a queer."
The hypocrisy is staggering, and all I can think to say is may Liberals of all breeds repent. But more importantly, may they choose. May they choose which side they fall on, because knowledge increases accountability. A Liberal who claims to be a Christian will suffer more on the day of judgement than a Liberal who never professed faith. As it is written, "And that slave who knew his master’s will and didn’t prepare himself or do it will be severely beaten. But the one who did not know and did things deserving of blows will be beaten lightly. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more." (Luke 12:47-48).
In all cases, you want to repent and do the Lord's will. There's just no way around it. But if you don't, there's no point in pretending you do. So, pick a lane. Pick Liberalism, and the doom it brings, but forfeit the right to claim Christianity, or pick Christianity, but become a Christian. There is no point in trying to claim both.
