There's a saying in Christianity, "sin fascinates before it assassinates". The principle in view here is that sin is actually rather attractive to us in the flesh. If sin wasn't attractive, we wouldn't do it. The truth is, doing the right thing is often hard, whereas doing the wrong thing is often at the top of our list of desires.
Of course, as Christians, we know that this state of affairs is less than ideal. While sin is attractive, the end result certainly isn't. Some people make the analogy of a cake. We all want cake, but in the end, too much makes us fat. But this is far from the ideal analogy. After all, you can have a cake once in a while, maybe even more often if you're active enough to work it off. But sin? You simply can't have it. A better analogy would be if that cake was prepared by your enemy, with every last crumb being laced with poison. Oh yes, the cake still looks nice, but now it is impossible to really enjoy it. If you eat it, you will die.
The book of Proverbs is filled with wisdom, giving moral guidance not just for the next life, but also for this one. Even in this life, sin is not free of consequences. Even the most pleasurable or profitable sins often come back to bite us in many ironic ways. Greed is a need that will never be satisfied. The more you have, the more you want, while the real treasures of this world, such as love and friendship, disappear. That's just ignoring the ultimate treasure, that being Jesus, being lost. Lust results in the most beautiful aspect of sex being taken away. That beautiful companionship we were designed for is marred, as we stop focusing on the spiritual aspect, and instead become intoxicated with the physical. Suddenly, the loving bond shared with one person becomes all but impossible to have, and an infinite number of lovers could never satisfy. And what does anger get us? When we release it, it feels good, yet the damage caused by doing so is often difficult to repair. Just these three common sins, in this life alone, cause terrible consequences.
And so we see that sometimes, and indeed more often than not, our desires are best ignored. Though the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, she is as bitter as wormwood. Sin may be fascinating, but it is not a devil you want to dance with. Therefore, avoid it as desperately as you would avoid those consequences, lest it bring those very consequences upon you.
