One of the least popular aspects of the Christian faith is God's view on sexual morality. In our culture, God's rules are considered too harsh, and to promote them is considered "judgmental", "bigoted", or any range of imaginary phobias. We live in a culture that tolerates, even celebrates, all kinds of sexual sins. Abstinence? Heck no! After all, "boys will be boys". But should that be what boys are? As humans tend to do, we are actually making up our own morality. Yet, even ignoring the absolute inviolable authority of God, we lack even the wisdom to do so.
It goes without saying that an omniscient being probably has a little more wisdom than reckless beings who have fun first, go to the clinic with an unbearable itch later. God, of course, does not make arbitrary rules. When He gives us a command, there's always the element of pleasing Him, but there's also the natural consequences for disobedience. As a loving God, He doesn't want to see us destroy ourselves.
Look at the world as it is now. We have STDs, STIs, teenage pregnancies, broken relationships, even murder mills. Sexual immorality brings with it all the horrors we see today as a result of our "sexual revolution". It turns out, while you would prefer God stay out of your bedroom, what happens in your bedroom doesn't stay in your bedroom. Society pays the price for rampant, uncontrolled sin.
Now imagine a world without rampant, uncontrolled sin. Who would catch a sexually transmitted disease if no one is transmitting them by fornication? How many teenagers are going to give birth to children while they are basically still children themselves if they're focusing on becoming adults? How many relationships are going to break down if we save sex for marriage, and are satisfied with our spouses? Even if abortion remained legal (which it shouldn't), how could a murder mill sustain itself if no one walked through the doors because they have an "unwanted" baby?
It is indisputable that even ignoring the moral aspect, God's laws are simply more practical. If we all obeyed Him, society would function much better. But that starts with the individual. Society may look down on those who try to keep themselves pure, but in the end, nature itself looks down on them. God, by contrast, looks favorably upon the faithful, giving us power to overcome temptation, and even rewarding those who seek to please Him.
In the end, this entire creation will pass away. However we use our bodies on the earth, whether for honor or dishonor, we will all die, and stand before God. At that point, even the greatest, most pleasurable moment of your life will matter only in one way: He will judge it. The question we need to ask is how do we want Him to judge it? The wages of sin, as His word tells us, is death. But the gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23).
Each of us is faced with a choice. We can live long lives of temporary pleasures, enduring natural consequences and finding only temporary satisfaction, ultimately culminating in an eternity separated from the Lord. Alternatively, we can repent. Every lustful thought, every perverted word, every depraved deed, can be nailed to that cross. The reward? Eternal satisfaction, eventually receiving an inheritance mankind cannot comprehend. A Kingdom greater than sex awaits those who love the Lord. Why not claim your share today?
