Catholic conduct and works-based salvation

It is an unfortunate fact that sinful human beings, including those who claim the name of Jesus, are often hypocritical. Nevertheless, as the brother of Jesus declares, "...shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." (James 2:18b). The implication of this, and indeed the entire chapter of James 2, is that the works a man does are indicative of his level of faith.

This is why, contrary to Catholic assertions, neither Sola Fide nor Eternal Security necessarily lead to spiritual anarchy. It may well be true that salvation is by faith alone, and that you cannot lose your salvation, but it is not true that those who affirm such doctrines will be ok with abusing it. If you truly believe that not only is sin so deadly that it earned you a one way ticket to Hell, but that the one and only Son of God died so that you wouldn't have to go, why would you continue to live in sin? Consistent Christians will treat their salvation as a safety net, not as a hammock.

The irony, however, is that Catholics are rarely so consistent. If you believe you are saved by grace initially, but that you must continuously work to maintain that salvation, self preservation alone should motivate you to exceed anyone else in Holiness. Think of it this way: Love is an excellent reason to please your spouse, but the threat of a hefty divorce settlement is far more persuasive.

Yet, at least in my experience, Catholics do not act as if they fear condemnation. Aside from the foolish attitude of "sin on Saturday, confess on Sunday", even in their apologetics, I find Catholics are quite content to not only cuss out "Prots", but even to bash the Bible. If I believed as Catholics believe, I'd have my nose in the word of God every hour (and would swiftly leave the Catholic faith, as it is unsustainable in light of scripture), I'd express the love of God to all men, I'd keep myself as free from sin as I possibly could Monday to Sunday, and I certainly wouldn't bash the Bible.

I am by no means saying that if Catholics cannot remain consistent, their faith is necessarily false. Indeed, many Catholics are lovely people, and I am close friends with a few of them. Nevertheless, if faith without works is dead, the Catholic Church is chock full of corpses. The question that must be asked is why? Why, if Catholics believe they are saved by works, are they so often less self-controlled than those who believe we are saved by grace through faith, not of works? There are many reasons to reject the Catholic Church, but the way Catholics behave, it seems obvious many of them already have. Thus, it is only fitting that we introduce them to the Savior who they know by name, but not by nature.

Catholicism offers no true hope of salvation, as while it adds works to salvation, no man is good enough to truly merit it. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and we continue to do this every day. But in Christianity, we are not saved by works, but to works. Catholics, if you really want Jesus to judge you by your works, rest assured He will. But we both know that will go down as well for you as for the Pharisees. None of us merit salvation. That's why it's called salvation. But Christ merits it for us, for He who knew no sin became sin for us, that we may become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Stop trusting in yourselves, for your sakes, and trust in Him instead.
