Christ has ALL authority

Imagine, if you will, a court case in which a man stands accused of a crime. He is representing himself, as he believes he knows the law better than anyone. He stands up and declares "your honor, I contend that I did not break the law. Rather, I broke your interpretation of the law. I don't think what I did was wrong, and therefore, you cannot convict me."

This is obviously very stupid. It wouldn't get you out of a parking ticket, much less a criminal offence. Yet, this is how many Christians behave in their faith. I've seen Christians who, having a close relationship with certain sinners, begin to empathise with the sin itself, and so they justify it. This is a conflict of interest. On the one hand, they want to follow Jesus. On the other hand, they want to justify this sin. Solution? "I just interpret the Bible differently."

If this defence would not hold up in a human court, how well would it hold up against the perfect Judge? When Jesus calls you into His throne room, He's not going to judge you by your interpretation, He's going to judge you by His own. He has all authority in Heaven and Earth. When you "reinterpret" scripture to suit your desires, what you're actually saying is "no Jesus, I have all authority in Heaven and Earth."

This is called treason.

Of course, all sin is treason against God. He calls it sin, and declares it to be worthy of death. For Christians, that penalty is overturned. Christ died for us, and therefore, the sins we commit are dead too. But when we justify our sins, we're not exactly showing the fruit of repentance. Salvation requires confessing Jesus as Lord. Are we living in line with that confession when we edit His word to our liking? At that point, can you even claim to have repented? "I repent of my sins, except the ones I approve of." That's not repentance.

Jesus says He has all authority in Heaven and on Earth. That's a very lofty claim. If you believe Him (and if you're a Christian, you do), what right do you even have to "interpret" His words? When He speaks, the only interpretation you should be doing is exactly the kind you're doing now. Read it, understand what He means, not what you want Him to mean, then obey. If you can't do that, you may as well leave His Church and reside with the wicked. Make your choice. Repent, or stop pretending you have.
