Diminished responsibility is responsibility nonetheless

"The devil made me do it!" This common excuse was the second excuse for sin humanity ever gave. But though it was true, though Eve genuinely was deceived by Satan, she still received punishment for her actions.

As human beings, we spend far too much time avoiding responsibility for our actions. We make excuses, we blame others, but even when others genuinely are at fault, that does not erase our responsibility, it merely diminishes it.

Whatever our reasons for sin, we all need to recognise that there is no excuse we can possibly give. Both Adam and Eve played the blame game, but God was having none of it. Will He accept the same from us? Not at all.

But one thing God will accept from us is repentance. Repentance doesn't necessarily deny anything that diminishes our responsibility, but it does accept the responsibility that we do have. It's being humble enough to acknowledge that we are not worthy of God, but being faithful enough to know that He loves us anyway.
