An interesting feature of the KJVOnly ideology is the complete lack of real opponents. It lives as if there is an enemy, to the extent where one KJVOnlyist even told me I was being dishonest when I said I didn't attack the authenticity of the KJV, but because it is an honest statement, I can chalk his automatic attack on my character up to pure paranoia. Most Christians do not doubt the KJV. In fact, while the KJVOnly ideology remains relatively small, the KJV itself is still, to the best of my knowledge, the most popular translation in print.
And frankly, from my perspective, that's a good thing. The KJV is a reputable translation. To the best of its highly qualified authors' abilities, the KJV preserves the original Bible, presenting it to an English speaking culture, with as few errors and drawbacks as possible. It is a Bible, and I want people to read it.
Now, I want you to imagine a Democrat saying that. If you're a KJVOnlyist, the chances are you're a Conservative. You're almost certainly not radical enough to support a Left wing gang of nut jobs who think Christian teaching is "hate speech" that shouldn't even be protected by the First Amendment. The Democrat party hates free speech, and because they hate the truth of God, the truth of God sounds like hate to them. They would ban you from reading your KJV if they could, and they're already making moves to ban you from speaking it aloud.
The same is true in Islam, a religion so violent, a Christian's only hope of survival under a truly Islamic legal system is to pay the Jizyah. You do not get to "blaspheme" Allah by preaching that God has a Son, nor do you get to insult the "prophet" by saying he is a false prophet. You read your KJV in Afghanistan and see how long it stays in your hand.
The KJV exists today precisely because under the reign of the Catholic Church, Bible translation was illegal. The Catholic Church used to punish those who translated the Bible for "heresy", and if they found such translations, they would burn them. A Bible in the vulgar tongue was repugnant to them, because they knew the result would be a Reformation.
This illustrates one of Satan's devices, of which we ought not be ignorant. When God speaks, Satan does not want you to hear it. If he can't stop you hearing it, he doesn't want you listening to it. If he can't stop you listening to it, he doesn't want you preaching it. Yet, as far as I can tell, most Christians do not do this with the KJV. We want you to hear, heed, and preach what the KJV says, because we believe it says the same as any other translation. It may even be our primary translation. This very site uses the KJV regularly.
So, why do opponents of the KJVOnly ideology not act like opponents of the KJV? If our beliefs are so Satanic, why do we not act like Satan? If our Bibles are designed to corrupt the KJV, why do we interchange them with the KJV? It would make sense if there were such disputes. If we legitimately criticised the KJV, if we overemphasised our own "corrupt" translations, if we came to different conclusions based on those translations, then it would make sense. But we don't. KJVOnlyists are fighting a shadow. An imaginary enemy, as invisible as Satan, but as real as his Heavenly throne.
Now, what is it called when you are so committed to a minor issue that you make enemies out of the Church? It's called being divisive. But that genuinely is unChristian. There are things for which the Church should divide. Gospel corruption, sexual immorality, Gnosticism, these are all good reasons to divide. But the fact that some people would rather hear God's word in their own language, which is the very basis for having translations like the KJV, does not make them a heretic. Considering them lesser, or non-Christians, does.
