On October 8th 2020, Ray Comfort posted a promotion of his Halloween themed tracts, along with an image of Trick or Treaters that said "Make an eternal difference in children's lives this year. Tracts present the Gospel when we aren't able to." The post itself said "Halloween is a special time where people come to your door to get some sweets and the gospel! Don’t miss out on this exceptional time to evangelize. Get our Halloween-themed tracts here:" (Redundant link deleted).
Naturally, there were several supporting comments, a fact for which we can thank the Lord. However, as regularly happens, weaker brethren (see Romans 14) also swarmed the post, criticising Ray, and any other Christian who supports this idea. They lambasted Halloween as a pagan festival, some of them even saying if you partake in it in any way, shape or form, you are not even a Christian.
Now, regardless of your thoughts on Halloween, the Gospel should be common ground for all Christians. And if you truly believe Halloween is a pagan festival, who needs the Gospel more than the very pagans who celebrate it? Halloween is the one day a year when we don't have to go out into the world to spread the Gospel, because the Lord brings the world to us! Is it not utterly foolish to send them away empty handed? Is it not totally tragic when people who need to hear the good news instead hear your deafening silence? What good is it if children receive bags of candy from your neighbours, but you have an infinite supply of the most precious treat of all, yet miss this opportunity to share it?
Regardless of your personal feelings about Halloween, viciously judging your fellow believers, especially successful evangelists like Ray Comfort, is neither a good look, nor a good work. If Halloween is so offensive to you that you use it as an excuse to shirk on The Great Commission for a day, you have a bigger problem than a few unwanted knocks on your door. And if your personal dislike of the season causes you to divide with the Church, you are more of a ghoul than any costume could make you. Cease the division, and seize the day! God isn't taking the day off, and He isn't giving you the day off either. Let's spend more time saving souls than quarrelling over how it's done!
"See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." - Ephesians 5:15-16 NKJV
