God and my Krav instructor

An interesting thought came to my mind during a Krav Maga training session. As is his habit, the instructor walked around the class observing us, and he took a moment to look at me and my partner. As you would expect, when the instructor looks at you, you tend to want to do better than when you're not being observed. This is a bad, yet natural attitude to have. You should be your own worst critic, but when the instructor comes by, you naturally want to do your absolute best.

So, I started thinking "what's he going to say?" And it dawned on me: "What has he said before?" So I ran through his previous criticisms. The angle of my fist, the position of my feet, the momentum of my hips, all things I typically mess up on, and he has helped me with. When he's there, I remember his instructions a lot more clearly, and am more able to put them in practice.

As Christians, we often ask ourselves what God would say to us, but we don't really have to imagine. Studying the Bible allows us to also think "what has He said before"? Then, like me with my instructor, we are able to put God's instructions into action.

But only if we study. Imagine how ridiculous it would be if every time my instructor said something, I started daydreaming about Grumpy Cat memes. I wouldn't be learning anything, and no amount of correction would make me a better fighter. So if you don't read God's word, how can you expect to become a better Christian?
