God helps those who live by faith and wisdom

There are two common phrases we hear in the Church: "God helps those who help themselves", and "God helps those who admit they cannot help themselves". The latter is often brought up as a response to the former. However, I contend that, as long as we use them correctly, they need not necessarily be in conflict.

See, the system the Lord has set up in this world requires two things: Faith and wisdom. The latter basically states that there are certain things we can, should, or even must do in order to live a fruitful life on this earth. The former necessitates God be included in them, for without Him, they are futile.

To understand this concept, let's look at Psalm 127:1. In this Psalm, we see that both God and man are active in life. God will not literally build a house for us, but He's with us when we build one, and if He does not intend it to stand, it won't. The great Tower of Babel itself was a failed project, because the Lord did not build that house. Similarly, we see that the Lord is the one who guards a city, but note how those cities still have watchmen.

All throughout the Bible, we see that God expects us to depend on Him, but not without effort. We often hear verses like Matthew 6:31-33 being cited out of context to suggest that preparation for the future is somehow lack of faith, yet what does Paul tell the Thessalonians? "If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat." (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

And so clearly, God expects both wisdom and faith to be active in our lives. As the Lord said to Satan, it is written "you shall not tempt the Lord your God". Do not tempt Him by being lazy and expecting Him to feed you. Do not tempt Him by being reckless, and expecting Him to keep you. Do not tempt Him by gambling and expecting Him to grant you victory. The thing about God is, you are not His master, He is yours. Therefore, we should act as good stewards. We should trust in His power to ensure our actions succeed, and we should take action in the faith that He will provide. Any other view, be it faith without works, or works without faith, will inevitably lead to ruin.
