In the beginning, God created man in His image. The very next thing man did was try to form God in his image. We are a very rebellious species. We strive with our Creator on a daily basis. And we're all individual. My rebellion is different from your rebellion. But only to an extent.
Atheists and agnostics find themselves in a few different categories. They reject Christianity not because of evidence, as they claim, but because God does not conform to their idea of Him. They see His laws as unjust, but they don't consider that they may be the unjust ones. Think about it this way: What are you? You are a fairly new mortal being with extremely limited understanding, extremely limited control, and unfortunately, an extremely limited lifespan. Do you know everything? Do you have unlimited authority? Did the world thrive without you? Will it continue to thrive when you're gone?
The answer to the first question is no. You do not know everything. There are things you don't know, and as a result of these blind spots, you will inevitably mess things up. But God knows everything. Everything that was, everything that is, everything that will be, and everything that could be. So is He not a little more qualified to judge us than you are?
The answer to the second question is also no. Any authority you may have comes from God. Without Him, you're just a miniature powerhouse struggling against other miniature powerhouses. The one who wins that battle is the one with the biggest gun. But God is the source of all authority. Nothing could exist without Him, not even space or time. He created the heavens and the earth for His good pleasure. He gets to dictate how it runs, and how we are to live in it, and how to proceed when we disobey.
The answer to the third question, of course, is yes. If the world did not thrive before you existed, it could not have brought you into existence. And it is truly amazing that it was able. The overwhelming majority of our universe, even the overwhelming majority of our own solar system, is hostile to life. But this one tiny little planet, God formed to be inhabited. We live here because it was designed to support us, and we were designed to be supported by it. If even one parameter was changed, however, our planet would be as dead as Mars. But you? You are not one of those parameters. The planet never needed you.
Because it doesn't need you, it will also never need you. The answer to the fourth question is yes. Of course, there is an asterisk there. It is entirely possible that you may be the last generation. But if the Lord tarries, and things resume their normal course for the next few generations, our world will not fall when you do. Even if you achieve great fame, such that all future generations will remember you, you yourself will perish, and will not be missed except by your loved ones.
So we see just how insignificant you are, and, by extension, the futility of your opinions on God. Your ideas may be pleasant to you, but let's be honest, if God was anything like we would design Him, the universe would not last an hour. Look at the destruction we have created even under His sovereign hand. Look at the violence. Look at the strife. Look anywhere in the world, you will see the hand of the Lord contending with the hand of man. You are the man in that scenario.
The problem is, this isn't just limited to atheists and agnostics. There are those who call themselves religious, but let's be honest here: They're just atheistic Theists. They believe in a Christ, but is it the Christ of the Bible? Then read the Bible to them and see how they respond. These will seek to reinterpret the Bible so that it suits them. The parts that say "judge not"? They really like those. The parts that say "judge righteous judgement"? Suddenly, "that's not the God I believe in". Well then you're not really believing in God! You're believing in you, yet you're attributing that to God.
In all of history, only one human being has been qualified to form God in His image. Coincidentally, He Himself is of one essence with the Godhead. That would be Jesus Christ, God in flesh. But why would God come in flesh? Why would He, who is so great, empty Himself of His divine attributes, and become subject even to death? It is because amazingly, as much as we war against God, God loves us, and seeks peace. There is more than one way to deal with a rebel. There are actually three.
The first is justice. God is well within His rights to just terminate a sinner's life and cast him into Hell to suffer everlasting punishment. This can happen, and unfortunately, for many people, this will happen.
The second is mercy. God cannot suspend justice, but He can execute it against Christ on our behalf. This would free us from eternal punishment, but once that has been done, which is already far beyond what He owes us, He could just call it quits and abandon us.
But that's not what He went for. Beyond all imagination, God opted for option 3: Grace. Grace takes mercy and multiplies it a hundred fold. Aside from not punishing us, as we deserve, God rewards us as we do not deserve! Full reconciliation with God, not just as debtors whose accounts are settled, but as sons and daughters of the one true King! And it costs us nothing. As Christians, we do not need to do anything extra. To escape the due penalty for our sins and inherit eternal life in God's Kingdom, all we have to do is believe. All who confess Jesus as Lord and believe He rose from the dead will be saved. This may not be the God you would invent, but praise be to the real God, it is the God we have. Therefore repent, believe, and get baptised.
