How does Jesus' finite punishment cover our infinite debt?

Writer's picture: Bible BrianBible Brian

A rare, yet nevertheless valid question is how does Jesus' finite death on the cross pay our infinite debt to God? Our sin earns us not hours on a cross, but an eternity in Hell. Yet, Jesus not only took a relatively short time to die, but of course rose from the dead. Contrary to some theories, He didn't even go to Hell during His time dead. So what gives?

This question is answered when we consider Jesus' divinity. Though fully human in every sense of the word, Jesus is also God. That means there is one sense in which Jesus is very different from a normal human. He, Himself, is as eternal as Hell. Thus, the eternal element is still there, just in a different place. A finite being requires an infinite penalty, whereas in order to take that penalty, Jesus, being an infinite being, required only a finite punishment.
