How the Big Bang got its name

The Big Bang is a very popular origins story in our culture. So popular, in fact, that it has even infiltrated the Church. Many Christians swear by it, many apologists defend it, and some apologists even use it as a witnessing tool. In short, they argue that the Big Bang is so impossible by natural means, only God could have caused it.

These people are not alone in their belief that the Big Bang is impossible without God. Indeed, the very name "Big Bang" is credited to physicist Fred Hoyle, who appeared on a BBC broadcast in 1949 to discuss his own origins story. Contrasting it with his own Steady State model of origins, he mocked what he called the "Big Bang".

Of course, Hoyle's own theory wasn't much better. Nevertheless, in spite of his non-Christian faith, he recognised the impossibility of the Big Bang. To this day, evidence for the Big Bang is pitiful, whereas the evidence against it is astronomical, no pun intended. As we learn more, the evidence against it mounts higher and higher. At this point, atheists would be better off just returning to the old "God of the gaps" excuse for their lack of plausible origins theories.

But what does this say about our compromising Christian brethren? It says they're more foolish than even the atheists! Tell me, who has the greater folly: The one who rejects God's word because they don't believe in Him, or the one who rejects God's word in spite of the fact that they do?

The Big Bang is impossible. Every sane person recognises this by instinct. Physicists know it, laymen know it, Christians know it. The argument should therefore never be "it's so impossible, only God could do it", but rather, "it's so impossible, God doesn't even need to account for it". It's a myth. A very stupid myth. It is a myth that is clung to not for reasons of intellect, but for the same reasons the Israelites bowed to a cow they made from their own earrings while Moses spoke to God atop a mountain. May it perish with Odin, may it dissipate with Mithras. May the Church repent of whoring herself out to this abomination. We need not merge the Big Bang with the very clear teachings of Genesis, and as a lofty opinion that sets itself against God, we must oppose it until it falls.
