Ricky Gervais once said that he thinks there is no point to the word "atheism" because there is no term for those who don't believe in the Boogie Man. In one way, his argument makes no sense. It is circular reasoning because it assumes God can be placed in the same category as the Boogie man.
However, his argument does reveal something else. Specifically, it tells us that Jesus is not in the same category as the Boogie Man. Jesus isn't treated like just another fairy tale. As it turns out, there are still some adults who believe in Santa Claus. I doubt it's as many as the 1 in 6 reported by one article I once read, but there are still adults who do believe in Santa Claus. And yet, no one cares. It's not even a fact commonly acknowledged.
If people really thought Jesus was a fairy tale, they would treat Jesus as a fairy tale. No one writes books, makes documentaries, or dedicates their entire life to disproving the existence of Santa. But God receives all the hate mail. It's very profitable to oppose Jesus, not just because people like to write about Him, but because they like to read about Him too.
The mere fact that people don't treat Jesus as a fairy tale suggests they know, at least subconsciously, that He isn't. The historical evidence that Jesus lived, died and rose again is more than sufficient for your average adult to put their faith in the God who grants us eternal life.
