It's not the art, it's the artist

You don't need to study martial arts in too much depth to know that for some people, their art is their religion. They swear by it, they boast of it, they belittle other arts, and they will debate you more vehemently than an atheist troll if your opinion differs from theirs.

One of the more common arguments against a martial art is that its techniques "don't work", or that its practitioners are often beaten by the practitioner of another art. In truth, while it's indisputable that some techniques don't work, it's rarely the technique or the art that is at fault, but the artist. For example, I practice Krav Maga. Krav Maga is a martial art developed by a Jewish man named Imi Lichtenfeld during World War 2. It is used by the Israeli Defence Force to this day, and has been modified for civilian use. One of my instructors is also a combat-tested Royal Marine. Safe to say, a martial art designed to fight the Nazis that is still used by one of the world's most efficient military forces today is probably rather effective. If it is done right.

But what if it's not? Personally, I'm not the best at Krav. There are several techniques I suck at. I know they work, because they hurt me even when done gently. But I myself suck at them. One particular example is the seat belt choke. The seat belt choke can be used as a third party defence technique aiming to free a loved one from a choke. (There are other situations in which it may be used, but so far, that's the situation I've trained it in most). The practitioner approaches the attacker from the front, reaching over the opposite shoulder from one side, and under the attacker's armpit with the other. Behind the attacker, the defender presses both hands together, and presses the wrist bone against the attacker's neck while simultaneously forcing the attacker's shoulder against the other side, causing a rather nasty choke.

When training the technique, the goal is to get your opponent to tap out. If they do not feel choked, they don't tap. If they do feel choked, they tap you, and you either let go and reset, or take them down. It takes me several attempts to convince my opponent to tap out. One of my training partners even said my attempt felt "quite loving". But when he does it to me, even if it's only light, it hurts. The instructor, when he demonstrates at a more realistic pace, shows that, in a realistic scenario, this technique is very effective. Again, when it is done right.

You see, then, that when a technique fails, it is more often because the practitioner has done it wrong, or attempted to apply it in the wrong situation, than because the technique itself is bad. The same is true for Christianity. So many people are put off Christianity not because of the merits of the faith, but because they have seen or heard about a Christian (or purported Christian) doing something bad. But as the saying goes, "not going to church because of the hypocrites is like not going to the gym because of fat people." Just as a martial art is bad when done wrong, so also is Christianity bad when done wrong.

But here's the thing about Christianity: all Christians "do it wrong". See, no one comes to Jesus because they are perfect. A Christian is a sick person telling you where to find the best doctor. We still sin, and in fact the Bible tells us if we say we have no sin, we are self deceived, and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8). You are guaranteed to find a hypocrite in the Church because the Church is nothing but hypocrites. And yes, all of the above applies to Bible Brain.

But Christianity has never been about perfection. At least, not our own. He who has no debt has no need of forgiveness, but all of humanity has a debt to God that we cannot pay. None of us are perfect. We all practice our art wrong, so to speak, and so we all lose our fight with sin. But when sin tries to choke us, Jesus knows how to put that seat belt choke on perfectly. 2,000 years ago, He came to Earth as a man, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross, taking all the punishment for our sin. Everything from a simple cuss word to flat out murder, everything can be forgiven. But it takes faith. If you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, He will raise you with Him. Don't let a single hypocrite put you off receiving eternal life.
