There are two types of heretic in this world: Those who take away from the Bible, and those who add to it. Both of these people will look down on you for not looking at it their way.

On the one hand, you have the "Pharisee". The Pharisees were a sect of Jews who were more attached to their traditions than to the word of God. They would insist upon following traditions God never sent down, all the while they ended up disobeying what God actually commanded.

On the other hand, you have the "Sadducee". The Sadducees were extremely literal in their understanding of the Scriptures, to the extent where they actually took away a lot of truth simply because it was not stated in specific words.

These two sects ultimately conspired to crucify Jesus, the very God whom they claimed to serve. But those who listened to His words faithfully received this comforting truth: "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”" (John 8:31-32)

Jesus will never scold you for keeping His word faithfully, neither will He punish you for refusing to accept man made traditions. The world will be offended by you, always, because they are offended by Christ, but as long as it is not Christ Himself you are offending, you are doing well.
