"LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!" cry the hypocrites of our age. As I write this, Christian media is constantly covering the recent example of Lady Gaga, a self-proclaimed Christian who calls Mike Pence, of all people, the worst example of a Christian. Her reason? "All are accepted."
Well Lady Gaga, that is true. Jesus turns no one away, because God wants no one to perish (2 Peter 3:9). And you are right in that love is actually the greatest part of the law; the very foundation of the Christian faith. It is love that brought the human race into existence. It is love that caused the Lord to clothe Adam and Eve as they left Eden. It is love that caused Him to maintain the human race, even keeping contact through the prophets. And of course, it is love that caused the Father to send the Son to die on the cross, and rise again, so that we, too, may rise into an eternal Kingdom.
But there is an element you, and others like you, miss every time. Your faith is anarchy! In your drive to accept all people (all except, apparently, Mike Pence and others faithful to the word of God), you have begun to accept all depravity with it. You have accepted that Jesus died for everyone, and that's great, but you have forgotten exactly why He died. He did not die for nothing. He did not die for His pleasure. He did not even die just to show His love, for if one dies just to show love, all he really shows is insanity. No, Jesus died for one thing: sin.
It is sin that separates us from God. Evil cannot dwell with God (Psalm 5:4). God cannot even look at evil (Habakkuk 1:13). And so while love is certainly a weightier matter of the law, Jesus says this you must do "without leaving the others undone" (emphasis mine).
The trouble with justice, which Jesus actually says is another weightier part of the law, is that it does not just overlook a transgression. To keep the whole law, and yet offend one time, is to be guilty of all (James 2:10). And so unfortunately, it is not so simple as to say "I accept everyone, and thus I am better than people who disagree with me on sexual morality". No, Jesus Himself says "Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:19). Indeed, He even goes as far as to say "If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15).
By her fruits, it is reasonably safe to say that Lady Gaga is not a Christian. These are not words that should be thrown around lightly, and in the end, it is for God to judge her, but her fruits are not Christian, and so it does not stretch the imagination to say that perhaps neither is she. But for sake of argument, let us give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she is. Let us assume that she will die, and behold the face of Christ, and rather than telling her "I never knew you", He instead tells her "well done, good and faithful servant". Let us then imagine that a faithful servant, such as Mike Pence, also gets to Heaven. The very man whom Lady Gaga has condemned has both done and taught the commands of the Lord, whereas she has disobeyed them, and taught men to do the same. So, what will be done with them? She shall be called least in the Kingdom, whereas Mike Pence will be called great.
I would like to conclude this post with the wisdom Jesus spoke in Luke 14:8-11: "When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”"
Let no one pretend they are better than another, for even if we do observe each other's sins, do we not have our own? One man may be gay, while another, who is not gay, might be perfectly ok with abortion. And perhaps an adulterer will look on this man and feel proud to not be a murderer. But a thief may be loyal to his own wife. But oh no, says the witch, these evils are far too sickening for me to partake in. And so a glutton may judge this witch and await the day the Lord exalts him. I could easily go on. You are all filthy sinners, and I am the wretch the old hymn warns you about. On what grounds do we throw stones at each other? You pick up one stone, 5 more may be aimed at your head. The solution is not to judge others, nor to exalt ourselves. Rather, let us all bury our noses in the word of God, and teach each other to observe it. Pray for each other, edify each other, love each other. You can't be a Christian without this.
