The Bible tells us that he who answers a matter before he hears it is a fool. This concept is true for all matters, not just the true ones. If you reject a lie before you know what the lie is, you're not much better off than those who reject the truth in the same way. In all things, knowledge is power. Getting inside the head of your enemy allows you to figure out how and when he will attack, and with this knowledge, you will know how to defend against it.
To illustrate this, think of atheists. How do you feel when they attack Christianity? "Your religion says women are second class citizens!" "Your religion is full of racism!" "Your religion held science back 1,000 years!" "Hahahaha! Sky Daddy, talking snake, neh neh neh neh neh!" What do we think when we hear these things? Personally, if I don't laugh, I'll cry. It's funny, it's tragic, it's embarrassing. Who do these people think they're kidding? They're trolls. I don't use this term lightly, but frankly, they're idiots.
So what must non-Christians think when we are the idiots? When we're the ones misrepresenting their views, unbelievers look at us in the same way we look at silly little internet trolls. So, what's the best way to defend Christianity? Learn to defend its antithesis. Learn how to defend other religions, not only learning their silliest arguments, but ultimately, learn the best they have to offer. And rest in the confidence, the best they have to offer will fall, and indeed already has fallen by the sword of great apologists who have already mastered this technique. Indeed, many of them know how to defend these religions because they came to faith from these very religions.
Perhaps you have too? Perhaps, by grace of God, you were saved from the very religion you hope to save others from. If so, do not look upon your past with shame, but look at it as a strength. You know where you were, you know where you are, show others that path. Have mercy on those who are where you were, as the Lord has mercy on you. Use wisdom, use prayer, and in all things, revere Christ as Lord, keeping a clear conscience. Be prepared, my brethren, for in the end, our enemy is not man, but Satan. He has our brothers in Adam held captive. Take them captive for Christ instead.
