In August 2019, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein died in prison, with the official narrative being that it was suicide. Because of some very incriminating evidence he could have given against some very powerful people, many people suspect foul play. Though the trend has largely passed, I still see these memes occasionally, though we are half way through 2021.
Now, I understand the desire to alert the public to a very serious paedophile ring involving some powerful politicians. Paedophiles are obviously not very popular with the general public, and for good reason. As far as I'm concerned, paedophilia should carry the death penalty, and I'm sure most people would agree that, at the very least, a long prison sentence is appropriate. However, as much as I want to see high profile sex offenders brought to justice, there is one thing my heart desires even more: The entire human race to know the Lord.
Jeffrey Epstein, however he died, is dead. His chance to have his sins forgiven is now gone, God has judged him, and his eternal fate is settled. Those against whom he could have testified may have murdered him (I refuse to weigh in on that) or simply benefited from his death. They may be caught anyway, or they may live a normal lifespan and avoid prosecution. After that, they, too, will be judged. If they get caught, that's good for us, but it's a temporary solution to a permanent problem. If they don't, that's bad for us, but it's a temporary problem that will one day be permanently solved.
What of the Gospel? If the Gospel is spread, that's good on both sides of eternity. On the earthly side, the Gospel leads to changed lives. Bad people gradually become more Godly until finally, one day, they die, the transformation is complete, and they spend eternity as perfect, Holy children of the living God. By contrast, those who do not accept the Gospel remain in their sins on earth, only to die and be eternally judged for those sins.
Again without weighing in on the Epstein scenario, it may be worth continuing. If anything can be done to bring paedophiles to justice, it should be done, and if Epstein is the key to that, so be it. But let us not forget that at some future time, everyone will die, and then face judgement. This is a far more pressing matter.
