Mary's virginity and an abysmal abortion argument

Abortion, being unquestionably the most indefensible evil human beings have ever invented, cannot be defended with reasonable arguments. The result of this is that it attracts only those who cannot argue reasonably. Their arguments demonstrate the most unbelievable absence of thought imaginable. Aside from committing the most common and easily spotted fallacies, such as appeal to emotion and ad hominem, they often commit the tu quoque fallacy (appeal to hypocrisy). That is, they assume all pro-lifers are Christians, then attempt to point to inconsistencies between Christianity and the pro-life cause.

An example of this can be seen in the Tweet in the header image. Pro-lifers rightly point out that pregnancy is never actually accidental. You can't catch children like the common cold; you actually have to have sex, or at the very least simulate it via IVF, in order to get pregnant. Therefore, with the sole exception of rape victims, every woman who has ever gotten pregnant is responsible for that pregnancy.

"But what about Mary?", some ask. Mary did not have sex until after she gave birth to her first born son (Matthew 1:24-25). So aren't Christians being a little hypocritical here? This is one of the most redundant articles I've ever written! You should not need me to write it, but apparently, some people do.

So, let's start with the common element here: Intent. Even if you ignore the fact Mary is the only woman who ever conceived supernaturally as a virgin, you can't deny that she very much wanted to bear Jesus. When she received the announcement that she had been chosen to bear the flesh incarnation of the Son of God, she said "...“My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name." (Luke 1:46-49). Does that sound like the kind of woman who would have a one night stand, regret it, then argue "my body, my choice" to escape the responsibilities of motherhood? She was thrilled! If all pregnant women thought like Mary about their children, they wouldn't treat pregnancy as a disease requiring medical intervention. Abortion would be as repugnant to them as it should be.

So the pro-life argument remains intact: Pregnancy requires intent. The only natural way to get pregnant is to have sex. The only other way is IVF, which of course is even more intentional. Mary is an exceptionally special case: Her pregnancy was a literal miracle, gifted to her by God Himself, and gratefully accepted by her without regret.

But the ironic thing here is there are only two possibilities: Either this guy believes Mary got pregnant without having sex, or he does not. On the one hand, if he does not believe Mary got pregnant without having sex, his response to "don't have sex and you won't get pregnant" shouldn't be "what about Mary?", but "good point, well made". See, Mary is the only virgin to ever conceive. Does this guy believe otherwise? No, of course he doesn't. Even the Christians he mocks believe Mary is the exception. So his comeback only proves the argument. At best, if he is right, and Mary conceived the natural way after all, that would simply make us both deluded. The difference is, our delusion makes us more prone to peace and to take personal responsibility. His delusion leads him to rush to violence to escape the "consequences" of his reckless sex life.

But the alternative is he does believe Mary conceived via miracle. In this case, Christians are 100% right. Not only is Mary the one and only woman who conceived without sex, but every other woman can avoid pregnancy by avoiding sex. Furthermore, it's a moot point, because abortion is murder regardless of what leads up to it, and you should avoid premarital sex for more than just the simple fact it leads to pregnancy.

See, with God, there is no compromise. His word tells us very plainly that the wages of sin is death. He will judge those who fornicate. He will judge those who lie to women (abortion is sustained through ignorance; most women who have abortions do not know what is in their womb, or how a "doctor" removes it). He will judge murderous doctors and pride-filled "shout your abortion" type lunatics.

But He doesn't want to.

See, the thing about God is He is 100% pro-life. "Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?" (Ezekiel 18:23). "...‘As I live,’ says the Lord God, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live...." (Ezekiel 33:11). "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9). "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:3-4).

Make no mistake, abortionists deserve to die. And, barring repentance, they will. All murderers will have their part in the lake of fire; the "second death" (Revelation 21:8). One might say the impenitent sinner, God will abort. But this is a tragic waste God is not willing to make. Thus, He sent His only Son to live as a man, a perfect life, free from sin, never once straying from the Holy path. Yet He died the most shameful and agonising death, judged for sins He never committed. He received the full wrath of God for sins you committed. Sexual immorality, murder, dishonesty, blasphemy, all of it. Jesus will forgive.

There are conditions, of course. But it's easier to receive eternal life from God than to take life from a baby. Those who confess Jesus as Lord, and believe in their hearts God raised Him from the dead, will not perish, but have eternal life. Those who do not will be "aborted".
