"Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God." - Jesus, Matthew 19:17

Anti-Trinitarians point to this verse as proof that Jesus is not God. According to them, He flat out denies His own goodness, saying that only God is good. But is that really what He's saying? Not at all. In fact, this statement is one of the most powerful of all the veiled proofs of the Trinity.

I say "veiled" proofs not because there's some sort of secret message in this, but because your average Joe probably won't catch this if they're not paying attention. It is not explicit; it doesn't say that the Son and Father are one, or that the word was with God and is God, or that he who has seen the Son has seen the Father etc. However, in saying that only God is good, Jesus is proving indisputably that He is, in fact, God.

Why? It's simple. If Jesus is not good, the crucifixion is worth exactly nothing. The whole point of the Gospel is that He who knew no sin became sin on our behalf so that we can become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Now, if Jesus knew sin, even one sin, that would make Him just as evil as us. James 2:10 tells us that even to keep the whole law, and yet offend just once, is equal to breaking it all. Thus, the Gospel itself is in vain if Jesus is not good. With this in mind, we can make the following syllogism:

Premise 1: Only God is good.

Premise 2: Jesus is good.

Conclusion: Jesus is God.

Fault me on my logic. What verse did I take out of context? What vital point did I miss? What lie did I tell? Evidently, the answer is none. Thus, far from disproving the doctrine of the Trinity, Matthew 19:17 actually shows the opposite: The Trinity is a sound, solid doctrine.
