"Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words." This phrase, falsely attributed to Francis of Assisi, is often used as an attack against wordy Gospel presentations. Regardless of who actually said the original phrase, it is highly flawed, especially when used in its modern context.
It is a sad fact that technology has made many of us rather lazy. I confess to having such an affliction. Reading is a pain in the neck, and sadly, this does affect my Bible study. Bible study. That's right, God used quite a few words to preach the Gospel. So many words that they fill 66 books. Within those books, God very clearly tells us how important words are to Him.
Now, there is something to be said about walking the walk. Of course you're supposed to practice what you preach. But tell me, how is living like a Christian the same as preaching the Gospel? I once heard of a Christian who asked, with a straight face, "am I not sharing the Gospel just by sitting in a café and drinking a coffee?" My friends, the whole point of going to a café is to sit down and have a coffee. When a Christian lives their lives, they are not doing anything an unbeliever cannot do.
So you see that while practising what you preach is a good thing, so is preaching what you practice. Your friends won't know Jesus if you never tell them about Him. The Gospel was never passed down by mime. The Bible is not a book of beautiful pictures, or an ink blot test. Even Jesus is called the Word, not the action. So yes, preach the Gospel, and if necessary, use words, but I promise you, words are absolutely necessary. Use them.
