Scripture reads you

While many believe the Bible is a list of rules and regulations that one needs to obey to be saved, it's actually designed to show us that we cannot be saved by our own steam. Every man honestly reading the Bible for himself will be forced to admit they have broken a significant number of God's commands. If God gave no commands, we wouldn't be aware of our sin, but through the law we are made aware of the fact that we are sinners.

Everyone reading this is a sinner. Everyone not reading this is a sinner. We all have some notion of that fact, because even lacking the scriptures, God has written the law on our hearts (Romans 2:14-15). But through the scriptures, we see the bigger picture. We see not only that "nobody's perfect", but that our Creator is, and therefore, we are totally incompatible. We see just how huge our failure really is, and exactly what that means for us when we face God.

But the Bible doesn't leave it at "sorry guys, you're screwed". It not only shows us how evil we are, but it gives the solution. There is one man in all of history who could legitimately read everything in the law and say "I've done all that". That man is Jesus Christ, God in flesh. He lay down His own life, suffering the wrath that He didn't deserve, but you did. Because He took your punishment, what's left for you is His reward. Through faith, we can be redeemed to God, our sin completely obliterated from His memory.
