Scripture: The opinions of the omniscient God

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

In this verse, Paul gives us the purpose of scripture: Doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. In other words, this book was not written so we could make it up as we go along. It says what it means, it means what it says, and we don't get to modify it to suit our own desires. Not even the prophets wrote their own opinions (2 Peter 1:21), but rather, they were guided by the Holy Spirit. What that means is that every opinion you find in the Bible is not the opinion of fallible man just putting his thoughts out there for you to take or leave as you see fit, but of infallible, omniscient, benevolent God! Thus, as I always say, we are not supposed to read the Bible and draw our own conclusions, but rather we are supposed to draw His.

Unfortunately, not everyone believes this. A number of people call themselves Christians, whether truthfully or not, yet they are more than happy to change the word of God when they think He's wrong. The Bible says X, but I believe Y, so when the Bible says X, it means Y. Friends, family, society, experts, all of these "authorities" are viewed as being equal to, or greater than the Bible.

This causes us to conflict. Humanity, unlike the Trinity, is divided. We all have a diverse array of opinions, most of which God certainly does not share, and so when one man speaks the word of God, another may speak the word of man, and a division occurs even within the Church. This division acts as an entrance for Satan. Like an open door, or a cracked window, he and his minions can creep in through anything. The solution? Put God first. Let Him seal every crack, lock every door, even place a minefield and a few turrets to keep out any hostile invaders. When the Church is united under God through His word, God is glorified. When the Church places herself before God, we degrade ourselves.
