Sin fascinates before it assassinates

When God made the heavens and the earth, they were very good. There was no suffering, no disease, no poverty, and no death. Adam and Eve enjoyed fellowship with God Himself, and there was no fear that something might go wrong.

But obviously, something did go wrong. Satan crept into the Garden and did not force them to sin, but rather made them realise how much they wanted to. Satan doesn't even appear to have touched the tree. Rather, we read "So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate." (Genesis 3:6a).

We all know what happened next. The "very good" creation was no longer very good, but instead, everything was cursed, right down to the very ground. Fellowship between God and man was severed, and death became both possible and inevitable.

The same thing continues to happen today. We don't even need Satan in our ears anymore, we just do what we want. We are slaves to our own desires. We all have our own forbidden fruits, but we see that the fruit is good for food, pleasant to the eyes and desirable to make us wise.

But it's foolish. Just like the tree looked good for food and seemed desirable for wisdom, the truth is sin always looks better than it really is. Our desires lead us in the wrong direction. In many cases, it even leads to a complete rejection of God. Even those who do not completely apostatise are still willing to brazenly rebel against our Creator. The result? Death. Of course, death. Sometimes physical, but always spiritual. There is only one cure. Only one thing stands between us and an eternity of Hellfire, that being that Jesus Himself came to earth, becoming the last Adam. As Adam got us all killed, Jesus bought us all eternal life.

And so there's a choice. Either we rebel to the point where our faith is dead, or we repent, trusting Jesus to make up for when we fail. And we will fail, the Bible makes that quite clear. You don't convert to Christianity and automatically become Jesus. But we need to be sure that we know the difference between a fall and a dive. Sin is a liar. It is a seductive woman with a dagger behind her back. It is a polished apple injected with cyanide. It is a siren sat on the rocks, begging you to come in, but rest assured my brethren, your ship will go down. Don't let it tempt you. Repent, and turn to the God who washes away your iniquities and sets you free.
