Lyrics

[Intro]

Be sober-minded; be watchful.

Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1

[Verse 1]

He was the serpent2 in Eden’s shade3,

he laid his trap, asking "did God really say...?4"

“You will not die,5” the monster lied,

“You'll be like God”, so the fruit they tried. 6

[Pre-Chorus]

Clothed in light7, yet the truth he twists8,

each lie he tells, like a deadly kiss!9

[Chorus]

Beware the predator! (Stand and fight!)

Submit to God10 (Stay in His light).

Resist the devil, watch him flee,

he runs away at Christ’s decree!

Beware the beast, but he cannot stay.

When Christ's around, he runs away.

[Verse 2]

The monster sought the Most High's throne!11

He sought a crown that was not his own.

But his scheme fell short, he was denied,

he fell from Heaven12, and cannot rise.

[Pre-Chorus]

His servants masquerade as right13,

But truth unmasks their borrowed light.

[Chorus]

Beware the predator! (Stand and fight!)

Submit to God (Stay in His light).

Resist the devil, watch him flee,

he runs away at Christ’s decree!

Beware the beast, but he cannot stay.

When Christ's around, he runs away.

[Bridge]

Take up the armor14, lift the sword15,

Stand in the strength of Christ the Lord!

[Chorus]

Beware the predator! (Stand and fight!)

Submit to God (Stay in His light).

Resist the devil, watch him flee,

he runs away at Christ’s decree!

Beware the beast, but he cannot stay.

When Christ's around, he runs away.

[Outro]

Be sober-minded; be watchful.

Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Background

I've been working on a personal project: A playlist filled with songs specifically written to play when I'm struggling with temptation. As the ultimate tempter, it's inevitable that the devil will feature in at least some of these songs, but I thought it would be cool to dedicate one specifically to 1 Peter 5:8. This is the verse that is sung at both the beginning and the end of this song.

As this verse warns us to be sober minded and watchful, since Satan is prowling around like a roaring lion, I thought "beware the predator" would be good as both a title, and a line in the chorus. But Scripture does far more than tell us to beware of him. It also tells us plenty of helpful information about him, including specific information on how he will attack us, and how we can fight him.

The first verse literally begins in the beginning, in the Garden of Eden, shortly after the creation of the heavens and the Earth. This is where the Bible first introduces us to "the serpent", whom both Isaiah and John identify as Satan. Unfortunately, Genesis 3 also describes how he first introduced us to sin. In so doing, it describes his strategy: Question the word of God, twist it around a bit, then claim God is the liar, withholding from us what is rightfully ours. This is a strategy He continues to use to this day, and sadly it is one we fall for on a regular basis.

The initial pre-chorus describes Satan as "clothed in light", a reference to 2 Corinthians 11:14. This verse warns us that Satan can transform himself into an angel of light (of course, his former role). The subsequent pre-chorus references verse 15, in which we are told that his ministers also masquerade as servants of righteousness. These are two very challenging verses, as they remind us that just because something, or someone, looks Godly, does not mean they are.

The song reminds us that this is not an infallible strategy, however. God did not leave us vulnerable, but rather, promises us that we can use the "sword of the Spirit" (i.e. the word of God), and gird ourselves with "the full armor of God", in order to defend ourselves from the devil's tricks. Furthermore, there is nothing more terrifying to Satan than when we resist him and submit, instead, to God.

The song is intentionally very "aggressive" and "energetic", giving a powerful boost. This sort of music is suitable for a martial arts gym, which I find also translates quite well to the spiritual battle. Personally, I find it helpful to picture actually fighting Satan. This is more in the realm of subjectivity, however.
