Lyrics

[Verse 1]

The summer sun is rising,

the days are getting long.

As season 2 is starting now,

we'll sing a brand new song1.

[Verse 2]

The fields are ripe for harvest2,

under the blue sky.

Let every heart look to the Lord,

and lift His praises high.

[Pre-Chorus]

The light is strong upon us,

it drives the dark away.

The fullness of God's mercy shines,

like the glorious day.

[Chorus]

In this joyful season,

let God's Church celebrate,

the Lord who reigns in majesty3,

whose love will never fade.

He will soon return for us4,

to take us all away.

We’ll work out our salvation now5,

'til that glorious day.

[Verse 3]

The seagulls scream so loudly,

but they can't drown us out.

The hymns we sing reach Heaven's gates,

so lift a joyful shout.

[Verse 4]

The oceans dance in rhythm,

the waves rush to the shore.

Creation lifts its voice again,

in praise forevermore.

[Pre-Chorus]

The light is strong upon us,

it drives the dark away.

The fullness of God's mercy shines,

like the glorious day.

[Chorus]

In this joyful season,

let God's Church celebrate,

the Lord who reigns in majesty,

whose love will never fade.

He will soon return for us,

to take us all away.

We’ll work out our salvation now,

'til that glorious day.

Background

Summer Praise is the second song in a 4 track worship series entitled "Seasonal Praise". As noted in the background to Spring Praise, the series owes its origins to George Baker's "Una Paloma Blanca". I decided to repeat the lyrical structure of Spring Praise, which also continues throughout the series. Another thing I decided would be brought back and repeated is that every song in the series must reference another Christian song. In Summer Praise, that song is "Glorious Day" by the Casting Crowns.

Summer Praise is similarly shallow, directing worship to Christ primarily through summer cliches. Unlike Spring Praise, that actually includes the tune, which comes from the very intentional choice to use Mozart AI's "Caribbean" genre to generate it, which makes it the only song in the series that isn't some variation of the Celtic genre. This produced a very "reggae" type theme, which I intentionally sped up by approximately 20%. This, paired with the steel drums, gave the song that relaxing, yet joyful energy I imagined when I wrote it.

While Spring Praise focuses thematically on resurrection, Summer Praise is directed towards perseverance. The chorus particularly reminds us that Jesus will soon return, but treats it as I believe Christians should: Close enough to look forward to, but far enough away that we should never assume we'll live to see it. While it is our hope, we still have work to do.

Unlike the other three seasons, I actually couldn't think of a major holiday that falls during the summer. Thus, while I bluffed my way through thematic consistency, there is no veiled reference to anything specific. There are, of course, still plenty of summer cliches, in particular hinting at "beach vibes". Waves crashing against the shore, adding to the "surfer" vibe. Seagulls also join the "beach vibe", but I treated them as almost a nuisance. Not because they actually are (though I'm sure many disagree with me there), but because I wanted yet another hint at perseverance. Seagulls are well known for being noisy, yet the encouragement is our worship reaches the heavens.
