Stop asking me to be a hypocrite

A vital aspect of the Christian faith I wish people would learn is that it is, and has for the past 2,000 years been fixed and finished. That is, it cannot change, not based on "new evidence", not based on the latest cultural trends, and least of all based on my own personal desires.

Because of this very simple fact, it is illogical to argue Christian morality based on what people think it should be. Of course, for thousands of years, the human race has always thought we know better than God, or at the very least we have the right to. The very first lie the devil told mankind is that disobeying God does not lead to death, but to being gods in our own right. The result of this is that we became like God in the only way we didn't want to: We know good and evil.

Continuing this trend, the Scriptures gather dust, and though we have greater access to God's guidance than any generation before us, we forego this privilege, instead continuing to seek our own path. Thus, it is not uncommon for unbelievers, and even Christians with weak (or false) faith to argue against Christians as if we are bigots, and the way to change our minds is to argue the logic of certain moral choices.

Though they never explain why certain things are good, they do try to shout Christians down as "intolerant" for... believing the Bible. The most obvious examples are God's views on marriage and sexuality. In our increasingly hedonistic culture, the suggestion that sex should be reserved for the marriage bed, which is designed for one man and one woman for life, is seen as positively repugnant. Who are we, as Christians, to tell people who they can sleep with, and when? What right have we to "slut shame"? How dare we say there is something inherently unnatural about two people of the same gender engaging in sexual acts? Come to think of it, isn't it against current scientific understanding to suggest gender is even a thing?

The list goes on, and that's just a few of the world's criticisms of Christian sexuality. But the thing is, arguing this way assumes Christians are making up our own faith. As if we're writing the Bible, rather than reading it, and just crossing things out and writing new things in whenever it happens to suit us. "Oh sure, I guess you're right, maybe you should only have to wait until the third date to go to bed".

There's a word for that kind of religion: "Hypocrisy". If, as a Christian, I start taking the parts of the Bible I like, but abandoning the bits I don't, I'm a hypocrite. The irony is, the world hates this kind of Christian. And for good reason. If you claim to be a Christian, you don't get to take the parts of the Bible you like and leave the rest. But when the world asks us to compromise our faith and accept their morality, they're asking us to take the bits of the Bible they like and ditch the stuff they don't like. That's not just hypocrisy, that's hypocrisy on behalf of another hypocrite!

As a Christian, I believe the Bible. That will offend the world. There's just no way around it. But let's suppose you could convince me that while there is a God, I should also agree with worldly morality. It won't happen, as I know my faith a little more than you want me to, but suppose you could argue me into hypocrisy. All that means is we are now both wrong.

See, I can't change the fact that God exists, I can't change His moral views, and I can't change the consequences for rebelling against Him. If there is a God, and there is a Hell, the only thing I can do about that is warn you. No amount of worldly "wisdom", no amount of bigoted tantrums, no amount of hypocritical Christians, nothing will be able to save you from eternal condemnation if you die without repenting of your sin.

But the amazing thing about God is that there is one thing that can save you from eternal condemnation. Again, kick, scream, call me a bigot, one way. I can't make another one for you, and neither can you. But with His own blood, Jesus Christ became the one way for you to be forgiven for every time you took the forbidden fruit and tried to become as God. Jesus never sinned, nor did He compromise with sinners, nor did He make an excuse for sin. Rather, He suffered the full wrath of God for sin, purchasing eternal life for every single person who confesses Him as Lord and believes He rose from the dead. Therefore, rather than asking us to be hypocrites by affirming your sin, repent of it and affirm our God.
