Temporary anger, permanent love

I rather like this humorous image of a grumpy old man who, though apparently being angry with his wife, continues to shelter her under his umbrella. This he does despite the fact it means he has no umbrella over himself, thus getting very wet. This is an excellent picture of love.

We often think of love as just a fluttery feeling towards a certain person. In truth, love is far more complex. When feelings cease, love doesn't. Even when anger rises, it never rises to the level of love. Love, being selfless, does not depend on the feeling that very often accompanies it. Rather, love is a constant choice, action, and state.

The image represents how a husband should be towards his wife. Scripture tells husbands to love their wives, even to the extent of giving themselves up for them (Ephesians 5:25), not being bitter towards them (Colossians 3:19), and that to love one's wife is to love one's self (Ephesians 5:28). 1 Peter 3:7 even says our prayers will be hindered if we do not honor our wives. It's that important.

Ultimately, the marriage bond is a picture of how God is towards us. Thus, the image can be interpreted literally as how a good husband is towards his wife, but it can also be used to illustrate how God is towards us. God cannot look upon evil or tolerate sin (Habakkuk 1:13), and so when we sin, God is angry. And indeed, He should be! Furthermore, He chastens those He loves (Hebrews 12:6), directing us to a more Godly path.

None of this will lead to Him abandoning us (Hebrews 13:5). While He will allow us to endure some of the consequences of our sin in order to correct us, He absorbed the ultimate penalty on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21), just as this old man takes the rain for his wife.

As a loving wife will not seek to anger her husband, so also should we seek to please God. Even in His anger, He will never leave us, He will continue to shield us, and He will not even deal with us as our sins deserve (Psalm 103:10). Our response, then, should be one of gratitude, walking in accordance with the attitude He has shown us. He has forgiven our sins, so we should cease to commit them. He has prepared good works for us to walk in, so we should indeed walk in them. As our God has loved us, so also must we love our God.
