The boy who prayed the alphabet

As simple as prayer seems like it should be, it can often be quite a struggle. We might be “too busy” to pray. We might struggle to think of what to pray. My personal difficulty is that, since God doesn’t directly reply, it feels like a one-sided conversation, so I drift off.

But thankfully, when we are weak, God is strong. When we don’t know how to pray, He does, and so the Holy Spirit effectively translates for us. With this in mind, I like to pray something along the lines of “Lord, I don’t know what to pray, so I’ll just ask you to act as if I’d prayed it”.

I am reminded of a similar story: a boy who prayed the alphabet. When he was asked why, he said it’s because God knows how to put the letters together. Be like that child. Pray in faith, knowing that even if you don’t think you can pray, God knows what He’s doing.
