Despite Catholic claims to not worship Mary, there is no shortage of images of Catholics, including Popes, bowing to her as to an idol. Of course, the idols they are bowing to are not actually Mary. They are made of stone or other inanimate materials. They are completely blind, deaf, and mute. But what if they weren't? What if every image of Mary was Mary? Or at least, what if they were capable of behaving as Mary would?
As it happens, we don't have to speculate too much. There are a few scriptural examples of God's servants receiving some form of worship. Their response is always to reject the worship coming their way, the sole exception being Jesus, who is, of course, God Himself. The disciples would not receive worship (Acts 14:8-18), and the angel in Heaven would not receive worship (Revelation 19:10; 22:9). Do we imagine Mary would be entirely happy with a Pope bowing to her, much less praying to her, and teaching the Church to do likewise?
The obvious answer is not a snowball's chance in Hell. Mary, like all Godly people, would direct any and all worship to Jesus. She would be utterly horrified if she knew the utter blasphemy that would follow her death, and if she could speak through the idols to which Catholics bow, she would declare "see that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God." Therefore, let us honor her in the appropriate way: Get rid of these idols and instead bow before the babe she bore, for He is our Lord and Savior.
