It is an unfortunate fact that until the very close of history, the Church on Earth will still have marks of sin. Conversion does not make us Jesus. As a result, there are heresies, and even the truest of believers will sin. Some of those sins are due to an actual failure to know what is right. If you don't know what the Bible says on a given issue, you may well sin. But what's far worse than a Christian who may not know what is right, and thus actively defends sin, is a Christian who knows, and even professes, what is right, but spends a great deal of time obstructing those truths.
The overturn of Roe v. Wade has brought many examples of this to light. Far too many Christians, knowing that God is pro-life, and confessing that they, themselves, are pro-life, have come forward in the strangest attempt at appeasement I have ever seen. Rather than seeing pro-life victories as a good thing, these Christians instead argue that God wouldn't want us "legislating morality". He wouldn't want unbelievers living like Christians, they say, so we should be sad when the government makes pro-life laws.
Now, there are two great ironies in this reasoning, the first being that abortion isn't even a religious issue. Of course, it is in the sense that God would want us, as Christians, to always do the right thing. But it's not like Christians are the only ones bound to moral laws, or even that we're the only ones who are expected to know what they are. In fact, you will often hear atheists brag about how they are "good without God", and how they don't need Him to tell them how to live. For this reason, everyone should know that abortion is wrong, and many non-Christians do. Not everyone who is pro-life is also a Christian, and that includes many of the legislators who pass pro-life legislation.
The second great irony is that legislating morality is precisely the reason legislation exists! According to Romans 13, government is God's servant for our good; an avenger that brings wrath on those who do wrong. Would these same Christians be opposed to legislation against theft? Against rape? Against honor killings? There are few things in this world more evil than abortion. Biblically speaking, as Christians, we are to protect children, and anyone else who can't defend themselves, to the best of our abilities. If you cannot legislate the moral law that you don't get to just arbitrarily kill your own children, the law has no purpose.
But Romans 13 seems to be an ironically obscure passage for politically vocal Christians, so we'll try to focus on that which most Christians will know. Consider the Lord's prayer. Most Christians know this even without reading the Bible. You may have even been taught it in school, like I was. One of the first things said in the Lord's prayer is "your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven."
Now, tell me, if God's will was done on Earth as it is in Heaven, do you think abortion on demand would be legal? Do you think a single voice would be raised in court against a heartbeat bill? Do you think an elected governor would be able to suggest making a newborn baby comfortable while discussing whether it should live or die? This stuff should be unthinkable even for sinful humans. For God? This, He says, "...I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination..." (Jeremiah 32:35).
As Christians, we frequently pray to God "your will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven". When the government hears the voice of God, whether they be Christians in government seeking to do His will, or unbelievers who just happen to have a good conscience, we should be rejoicing! He has answered our prayer! His will is being done on the Earth. Not quite as it is in Heaven, but it is still being done. Christians who instead confess that God is pro-life, but complain that the government, whose very job it is to punish murderers and ensure peace in the land, do indeed legislate for the protection of innocent lives, are being needlessly obstructive in the most irritating way possible!
It is one thing to be upset about pro-life legislation in ignorance. If you know that murder is wrong, but do not know that abortion is murder, then it makes sense to be upset about pro-life victories in politics. If you know abortion is murder, but for some reason don't know the Bible is against murder, it makes sense. But if you are so aware that abortion is wrong that you will actively profess to be personally pro-life, yet you are upset when your pro-life views become at least legally viable, you have a problem. You're inconsistent. And I can promise you this much: The devil will not show you the same respect you are showing him.
The trouble with abortionists is they tend to be quite aggressive. They seek to actively punish dissent. If you peacefully gather outside an abortion clinic to pray, to offer information and/or support, if you publish pro-life information online, if you say anything that so much as hints that you are pro-life, they want you punished for it. It should not be surprising that those who support the ritual sacrifice of children in the name of "sexual autonomy" and "women's rights" can be quite violent in their defence of those views. They will not tolerate your pro-life views.
So what's the point? What is achieved by this obstructionist attitude? What could be achieved if it was removed? My brethren, if you are pro-life, be pro-life. Don't whine when pro-life victories occur, rejoice! Don't give credit or ammo to the abortion lobby, and definitely don't act like God stands where you stand when you do. God is pro-life, and you know that, because you are pro-life. So what are you even thinking when you act like this isn't the case?
