Of all the world's weird philosophies, Theistic Evolution is one of the ones I understand the least. We're not talking about an uphill battle here, but a climb from the ground to the moon. Literally everything is against it. Science is against it, history is against it, God Himself is against it, even many atheists have the wisdom to know that the Christian faith simply is not compatible with Evolution (and surprisingly, a few of them reject Evolution too).
Of course, this is the very reason the modern version of Evolution was made up. It is designed to directly oppose God. To quote Charles Darwin, the founder of the modern religion, in his autobiography, "I had gradually come, by this time, to see that the Old Testament from its manifestly false history of the world, with the Tower of Babel, the rainbow as a sign, etc., etc., and from its attributing to God the feelings of a revengeful tyrant, was no more to be trusted than the sacred books of the Hindoos, or the beliefs of any barbarian." (1)
This, in itself, should be enough to show Theistic Evolutionists the flaw in their beliefs. They are professing a myth that was all but explicitly designed to destroy their faith. And, sadly, it is succeeding. One of the main reasons people leave the faith is the origins issue, and those who never were a part of the faith in the first place are not as motivated to try to fit Evolution into Genesis as a compromising Christian. As a result, when they read things like "for in six days the Lord created the heavens, the earth and all that is in them" (Exodus 20:11), they interpret it as "in six days the Lord created the heavens, the earth and all that is in them". So when a Christian validates Evolution, what those unbelievers hear is "I don't believe the Bible either". So why should they? The truth is, Theistic Evolution is the most inconsistent and unsustainable philosophy on planet Earth. Science is against it, history is against it, and God is against it.
Science is against Theistic Evolution because it would literally take some kind of sick minded god to overcome the scientific obstacles to Evolution. Ironically, this includes natural selection. Though commonly claimed to be synonymous with Evolution (and as the full title of Darwin's book suggests, the mechanism by which it occurs), natural selection is actually the very reason Evolution cannot happen. Why? Because transitional forms would be naturally selected against.
Think of literally any feature that is vital to a creature's survival. Small features, such as colour, while they may provide an advantage, are not exactly fatal if they go wrong. But think about a lung. If a creature can't breathe, it's lights out. Any creature that needs air to survive cannot survive with a half-evolved lung (and that's just ignoring the rest of the respiratory system). Thus, a creature that needs to breathe can never evolve, as if it needs to breathe before it can, it won't last long enough. This is one of many scientific flaws with Evolution.
History is against Theistic Evolution in two ways. First, Evolution is more of a historical issue than a scientific one anyway. Yes, there are some scientific themes in Evolution. There are scientific themes in all of history. We can ask, for example, how the black plague spread. But that tells us nothing about when it spread, or where, or how many people died etc. Just as the plague is an issue of history more than science, so also is the origins issue more about what happened in the past than what happens in the present.
Thus, the first way history is against Theistic Evolution is simply that it never happened. By God or by nature, nothing like Evolution has ever happened in Earth's history, regardless of whether or not it would even be scientifically possible. And until about 150 years ago, most Christians knew it.
This is the second way history is against Theistic Evolution. It is a brand new heresy. So brand new, in fact, that Christians of the past had the opposite problem. All throughout history, Christian writers defended the historical Genesis account not against Old Earthers, but against those who believed creation was instantaneous. When Martin Luther said "let six days continue to be 6 days", he had no idea who Darwin was, he was talking about not making the 6 days 1 day. When Augustine said the Earth was not even 6,000 years old yet, he wasn't arguing against Lyell, he was arguing against pagans. (Ironically, Augustine was one of those who, at least initially, believed the 6 days were just 1 day, and he is often abused by Old Earth Creationists in defence of their views). These are just two prominent historical Christians who wrote before Darwin defending a natural interpretation of Genesis. It is a historical fact that Theistic Evolution is even newer than Darwin's atheistic version.
Emphasis on the atheistic. This is where God comes in. See, as previously established, Evolution was made up to oppose God. Initially, science was designed to glorify Him by better understanding His creation. The founders of most modern fields of science were Bible believers, each of whom would throw a fit if they knew about the mess we are in today (though of course they were not without their own battles). And of course, the history recorded in the Bible, including Genesis, ultimately comes from God. It's not stone age poetry. It isn't just man's best guess. It is the authoritative word of God Himself, the Creator. And when you say Evolution happened, you are disagreeing with Him. Now, Theistic Evolutionists, is that a position you want to be in? Is it really worth lying about God just to stop atheists laughing at you? And believe me, they are still laughing at you anyway. If you don't believe the Bible, what makes you think you'll convince them to? Even if you win them, what you win them with is what you win them to. If you win them with lies, you win them to lies. Then they will be judged for it, and you will be judged more strictly than they, for they were deceived, but you are the deceivers.
Let's assume you are not false coverts. Maybe you're genuinely saved, you've escaped the fires of Hell by the grace of God, it's just that, for some inexplicable reason, you have chosen to defend this specific lie. We're still going to be judged. Paul describes an event in which our works will be tested. Our deeds are represented by various materials, built on a foundation (of course being Christ). And God sends a fire. Tough building materials, of course, withstand the fire, and we are rewarded. Flammable materials, not so much. They're burned to ashes, and rather than reward, we suffer loss. So go read 1 Corinthians 3:9-15, and tell me, do you consider lying about origins, even if your motive is to look less stupid in front of fools who will think you're stupid anyway, to be gold? It is straw. It will be burned, and if you get into the Kingdom, it will be as through fire.
Theistic Evolution needs to be abandoned by the Church. Like many heresies before it, it is essential that we condemn this lie to the history books. It is an abomination to intelligent thought, to spiritual health, and especially to outreach efforts. The damage it has done has already reached far and wide. Let us destroy it before it condemns even one more soul. If we preach Jesus as Lord, let us believe His word. If we call people to faith, let us stand strong in the faith ourselves. If we preach that one must become a new creation in Christ, let us profess the original creation, not as a consequence of some magical explosion, but as the labour of a Holy God. Only if we trust God every time He speaks can our own speech have any real value.
