"I'd rather go to Hell than worship a God who..."
There are a number of ways to end that sentence, all of which reveal that the individual unbeliever/heretic/apostate is not basing their worldview on whether or not it's true, or even likely true, but rather on what they would like to be true. Those who admit this so openly are rare, but tragically, they do exist.
There is an added layer to the foolishness of such wilful ignorance, and that is that the consequences far outweigh such a pointless sacrifice. Human beings have a natural instinct for self preservation. When we feel pain, we seek to reduce that pain. When we're sick, we look for a cure. When we face threats, we either run from them, or seek to neutralise them.
With Hell, none of that is possible. There is no relief, no cure, no escape, and no shield. It's just an eternity of non-stop punishment. Any pain you've ever felt, that's nothing. Imagine that, with no relief. No respite, no parole, 10 trillion years will go by without even one second being shaved off your sentence.
And for what? Because you don't like God? Does He lose anything by you willingly rejecting His free gift of eternal life? Do you gain anything by giving up your eternal inheritance? Can you even reduce an ounce of punishment for someone else?
And of course, sometimes, that's the supposed motive. I was once told it's better to go to Hell than speak against homosexuality, as if God is some kind of oppressive tyrant who hates gay people without cause. But of course, He's not. Not only did God create the entire universe, up to and including the human race, giving Him the ultimate right to dictate how we must behave and how we will be punished for failing to do so, but He actually made a way out. There are exactly zero human beings whom God wants to go to Hell. We are told repeatedly that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 18:23, 32), that He would prefer repentance (Ezekiel 33:11), that the very reason He is postponing His return is that He doesn't want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9), and even that Hell wasn't even designed for humans, but for Satan and his angels (Matthew 25:41). In other words, everyone who goes to Hell is going there of their own free will.
There is no point in going to Hell. The way out is exceedingly simple: Repent and believe. Jesus took all of the punishment for sin on the cross, and so you can be rewarded for His righteousness. Because the eternal Son of God lived a perfect human life and died, the finite sons of Adam can have eternal life in spite of the imperfect lives we lead. Repent, believe and be saved.
