There IS middle ground

I once came across a Facebook post that said "Dear mediates: defend a point from Calvinism against Arminianism just once and I'll take your "in the middle" claim seriously." The implication is that Mediate theology and Arminianism are identical.

Now, personally, I've never had a problem just admitting what I am. If I was an Arminian, I would admit I was an Arminian. The reason I accept the term "Mediate" isn't because I'm somehow afraid of admitting I'm an Arminian, but because I am not an Arminian. Rather, the term "Mediate" best describes my views on the issue of God's sovereignty and man's responsibility as it pertains to salvation. [Post publication update: I have since studied Molinism, and now believe this to be the best descriptor of my personal beliefs.]

Depending on how familiar you are with this ministry, you may know that it is, itself, descended from two Facebook pages: Path Treader Ministries, and God Squad Apologetics. On Path Treader Ministries, I authored a 5 part series detailing my opinions on the Doctrines of Grace. This series eventually became the header articles in the Calvinism vs. Arminianism section. Reading through this series, you will notice two things. First, I am actually rather charitable, and even sympathetic towards Calvinism. It cannot be said that I agree with it, but I am certainly not going to bash it, as many Christians, sadly, are quite swift to do. Although I do not believe Calvinism is Biblical, I do understand why Calvinists might think it is.

Second, you will see that I had mixed opinions on each point. Limited Atonement, I found to be utterly indefensible. Perseverance of the Saints, by contrast, I see as unassailable. The only other point I took a hard "no" stance on is irresistible grace. When it comes to Total Depravity and Unconditional Election, I believe both camps miss the mark. Of all of these, Limited Atonement is the only point of Calvinism I struggle to sympathise with Calvinists on, and coincidentally, it is the most commonly rejected point by 4 point Calvinists.

So, you be the judge. Did I, as a Mediate, adequately distinguish between myself and an Arminian? Am I in the middle of two extremes? In reality, it doesn't bother me either way. If, in my studies, I discover that Arminianism is a more adequate description of my beliefs, I will accept that label. Even if it turns out I lean more to one side than the other, so be it. This is my prayer: That this tragic schism will subside, and eventually cease completely. Calvinists, Mediates, Arminians, Christians. We dishonour Christ with these petty disputes. Our refusal to understand each other, our failure to love each other, these things just do not honor Christ. Therefore, regardless of which camp you fall into, if either, let's take each other seriously.
