Twisting a book you don't even believe

Leftist: The Bible says *insert usually out of context Bible verse that vaguely seems to support my position*

Christian: Do you believe the Bible?

Leftist: No.

Christian: So why cite it as your source?

Leftist: ...

The above scenario is both common and frustrating. Leftists, who spend most of their time and energy bashing the Bible and those who believe it, often cite the Bible when they think they can twist it to support their selfish desires. For example, one Huffington Post article, published by an LGBT activist, cites Matthew 19:12 as evidence that Jesus believes LGBT people are "born that way", and Christians should "get over it" (1).

There are two problems. First, that’s not even close to what the verse says. It talks about eunuchs, not LGBT practitioners. A eunuch is someone who, for one reason or other, is celibate. In other words, they don't have non-traditional relationships, they abstain from relationships altogether. As for "He that is able to receive it, let him receive it", that is obviously not "some people are born gay, get over it". After all, even if it was, that still wouldn't say anything to actual homophobes, who of course would not be able to receive such a teaching. No, this is clearly about said eunuchs, if they are able to receive the gift of singleness, receiving it. For other people, the idea of celibacy may be repugnant.

But the bigger problem is, even if the Bible said everything this particular author wants it to say, so what? The author isn’t a Christian, therefore why cite the Bible as a source? You can’t pick and choose. In fact, the irony here is that the Bible is opposed to being used by those who reject it. To the wicked, God says "What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee." (Psalm 50:16-17).

And indeed, what right do you have to cite scripture you don't believe? If you don't believe scripture, yet you cite it, you are foolish and hypocritical. And yet, we see this all the time from the Left. From political hacks like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden to very Tom, Dick and Harry with a blog, we see people who are so hateful towards Christians that they revile the very concept of religious freedom having the cheek to cite the Good Book! People have been criminally tried for merely citing scripture on issues of homosexuality because it's "hateful", yet the same people who nod along as if that's ok are so audacious as to pick up that very same book and say "see? When we cross out the bits we don't like and play silly games with words, your book can look like it totally agrees with us!"

It really is time to pick a lane. If you want to quote scripture, let it say what it says, and at that point, either voice your agreement with it and become a Christian, or voice your dissent. If you don't want to be a Christian because you don't like what scripture teaches, then stick with that. It really is that simple.
