With the world being as crazy as it is today, it's hard to say exactly what the most insane aspect of it is. Is it the fact that a significant number of people now publicly display their (usually very obvious) pronouns on their social media accounts? Maybe it's the fact that people will accuse you of not being a Christian if you reject experimental drugs? Perhaps it's that CNN is still called a news organisation? With the world in tatters, it's hard to say what the craziest aspect of it is.
But I think a close contender for that spot is that "cultural appropriation" is practically considered the unforgivable sin. Cultural appropriation, according to one article by the BBC, is "...when a tradition, such as clothing or a hairstyle, is taken from a culture and used in a different way." Certain things are culturally significant to some people, but can be used "in a different way" by others. When this happens, no matter how innocent it may be, it causes outrage.
Discussion of cultural appropriation becomes especially loud around October, as the impending celebration of Halloween gives rise to a number of "culturally insensitive" costumes. But it's not just Halloween. Something as simple as a hair style can land one in hot water with the Leftist mob. But I will never understand why.
In fact, the greatest irony is that while they are offended by that which is "appropriated" from other cultures (as if culture is a thing in limited supply...), they have spent years "appropriating" culture from, in particular, Christianity. How often do we hear "put Christ back in Christmas"? Yet, every atheist who has ever celebrated Christmas has rolled their eyes at such statements. Of course, it's not likely the same people. An atheist who is content to celebrate Christmas probably will not get upset about such trivial things as "cultural appropriation", nor will someone who is offended by "cultural appropriation" be too likely to celebrate Christmas, as it's a "racist symbol of the patriarchy", or some rubbish like that. Nevertheless, they don't often complain when atheists celebrate Christmas either.
And what about marriage? Marriage has been around for 6,000 years, having been established by God before man even fell into sin. Marriage has always been the union of one man and one woman, forming a new family unit, usually both creating and raising children. Yet, the same people who complain about "cultural appropriation" are quite happy to take over the cultural phenomenon that is marriage, use it differently, and aggressively suppress those who wish to observe it naturally. Gay "marriage" is the ultimate form of cultural appropriation, yet it doesn't offend those who criticise you for having the wrong hairstyle, clothing, food, or music tastes etc.
The ironic thing is, the Bible does condemn some forms of cultural appropriation. But not for the same reasons. Biblically, there are two kingdoms: "the world", and the Kingdom of Heaven. As Christians, we are called to be in the world, but not of the world. That means we are supposed to be, in effect, strangers in this land. When in Rome, do not do as the Romans do!
The great thing about culture is it is in infinite supply. When you "appropriate" someone's culture, which you might not even know you're doing until some numpty complains about it, they still have it. You haven't "appropriated" anything! This means not only is there no legitimate way to lay claim to any aspect of any culture, but we are also free to share Heavenly culture across the world. In fact, this is what we are commanded to do as Christians: "...All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20).
Calling all humans: In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, who will one day judge every culture, I implore you, appropriate Christian culture! And not just the bits you like. Don't take "love your neighbor as yourself" without taking "love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and mind". Don't take "judge not, lest ye be judged" without taking "judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgement". Don't take Heaven without Hell. Take all of Christian culture, and you will receive the greatest aspect of it: A relationship with God that will last throughout all eternity.
