Would Jesus fight for Mary?

As gun control is a non-theological topic, I don't often like to mix discussing it with my ministry work. However, there is one argument I would like to address: Since we are called to love our enemies, there is simply no reason for a Christian to own a gun.

The truth is, while Christians are called to love our enemies, we are certainly not called to be Pacifists. Loving our enemies does not negate our responsibility to love our family, our friends, or even our neighbours. A simple question to ask, in any situation, is "what would Jesus do in this situation?" Of course, a lot of the time, the answer is "Jesus wouldn't be in this situation", but the scenario we are about to propose is entirely possible for a sinless human being.

What would Jesus do if, in the middle of the night, an evil man broke into His house and tried to rape Mary? It is undeniable that God loves even a rapist. Jesus was going to die on the cross for them, too, but in our hypothetical scenario, the cross is not immediately in view. What is in view at this particular moment is a violent offender threatening His mother. Based on Bible passages such as Exodus 22:2-3 and Luke 22:36-38, I'm going to suggest that Jesus' immediate response to this assault would be to do what it takes to defend Mary, even if that meant using a lethal weapon. Also, being a wise man, Jesus would probably have had a weapon of some kind in the house for just such a scenario.

Now, in my eyes, the mere possibility of innocent people being attacked is enough to make me staunchly pro-gun. Any government that denies you the right to defend yourself is just as evil as the people you might need to defend yourself from, and indeed, historically, have often been that very entity (Nazi Germany being the obvious example). But supposing this reasoning is not enough to convince you to be pro-gun. That isn't my goal with this article. All I want is for people to stop insisting Christians are always supposed to be Pacifists, and that Christians are somehow inconsistent if they are pro-gun. If you believe Jesus would have used a weapon to defend Mary from a rapist, you acknowledge that He was not a Pacifist, and therefore Christians can afford to not be Pacifists either. If, by contrast, you believe Jesus would have stood by and let someone hurt His mother in the name of "love", you are plain wrong. Frankly, I would go as far as to say you are insane. Either way, stop using Christianity as an excuse to deny people their God-given right to own defensive weapons.
