Yes, God would say that, and it's His right

"I don't think God would say something like that." "I don't think God would really do that." "I wouldn't want to follow a God like that." Statements like these are, tragically, very common in the Church. Of course, none of us have perfect doctrine, and certainly none of us are entirely consistent with everything we know to be true. We're all fallible sinners, after all.

But God has this bizarre character trait where He wants to be God over us, rather than us being God over Him. His word is quite literally His law, and He does expect obedience. The problem is, because we are sinful, and we often like to follow our own hearts, doing what is right in our own eyes.

This isn't how we're supposed to be. Every single one of us needs to repent of every time we've followed our own hearts and submit ourselves to the word of God. It doesn't matter if you think God would say something if the scriptures show that He literally did. If the Bible says God will/did do something like that, your belief that he wouldn't won't stop Him, or change the fact that He did. And if you wouldn't want to follow a God like the Bible describes, at least stop pretending that you do follow the God of the Bible. There are two choices: Obedience and life, or rebellion and death.
