We often hear that money is the root of all evil. This isn't necessarily true, but the Bible does say that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. As a species, we have a strange tendency to covet wealth. We pursue it as a lover, we serve it as a god, we are even willing to sin to gain or keep it. But as Paul tells us, we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we will carry nothing out. Not a single penny will follow us to the throne of God when we are judged by Him.
This should encourage us to live Godly lives, not pursuing wealth, but rather, obtaining it honestly, being content in its absence, and using it wisely when we have it. Charity is certainly a good thing. As Christians, we should be content with having our basic needs met. Anything beyond that, while not sin in itself, is a luxury we should be ok with losing, if the Lord wills. If you can be rich in this life, that is wonderful for you, but even if it lasts a lifetime, it will not outlast your lifetime. Thus, you should seek to store up treasures in Heaven, obeying the Lord to the best of your abilities.
