Scientific Objections
What are scientific objections?
Scientific objections are objections to the inerrancy of Scripture based on alleged scientific errors found within. These take various forms, such as the following:
-
Questions about why the Bible does not address a specific scientific topic
-
Objections to inaccurate scientific language within Scripture
-
The Bible conflicts with certain pseudo-scientific theories
-
Christianity's alleged history of opposing science
-
Conflicts with contemporary "knowledge"
An overview of why they don't work.
Although there is some overlap, the Bible is not a science book. Thus, while it will never make an actual error, it is also not overly concerned with scientific accuracy. It is no more logical to expect the Bible to address certain scientific topics than to expect a cook book to give you a detailed summary of the fall of Rome.
When the Bible does address scientific themes, it often does so in less technically accurate language, such as the so-called "language of appearance". This is perfectly logical. Even we, in our scientific era, do not speak with perfect technical accuracy. Scientific organisations, such as NASA, still use terms such as "sunrise" and "sunset", even though the sun is not actually rising or setting. We still say "moonlight", even though the moon does not actually give light. We talk about the sky being "above" us, even knowing that "up" is a relative term, and if we class "up" as the direction above our heads when we stand upright, the majority of the sky is actually "below" us, since we live on the surface of a round earth. The list is endless, with the ultimate point being that scientific accuracy is not necessary for ultimate accuracy, and it can often be more efficient to use inaccurate language to describe other truths.
One would think that Scripture's opposition to pseudoscience would be considered a good thing, but this is not the case when the critic in question believes those pseudoscientific theories. Evolution is a particularly common example, as it is the dominant atheistic religion in our world. On top of this, it has even infected certain Theistic circles. Due to the unique nature of Evolution, both the atheistic and Theistic versions have their own sections on this site, and so articles pertaining to them will not be specifically listed here.
Christianity's alleged suppression of science is far outmatched by Christianity's ACTUAL history of having built science from the ground up. Of course, as with moral objections, the Bible is never responsible for those who abuse it. You can point to many instances of Christians believing, professing, and even aggressively pushing silly things, but 1. the Church is/was not unanimously united with them (and usually, they are a minority) and 2. even if the entire Church was unanimously aligned with them, that wouldn't matter if Scripture does not. God is more authoritative than 100% of Christians.
Finally, there are times when the Bible does appear to conflict with genuine science. This, however, is because science, unlike the Bible, is still fallible. Whereas the Bible is the inerrant revelation of the Living God, science is man's own attempt to understand His creation, and thus, it is inevitable that, since we make mistakes, we will occasionally come into conflict with a source that doesn't. History, however, has repeatedly shown that where science and the Bible do genuinely conflict, science tends to catch up when further study is done.
Thus, in general, scientific objections to the Bible come in two forms: When the science is sound, and Scripture does not ACTUALLY oppose it, and when Scripture does oppose it, but the science is not ACTUALLY sound. There are no instances of conflict between a contextual reading of the Bible and a rigorous study of the reality we observe. Therefore, all scientific objections to the Bible fail.
